New to Toku

I fell into toku about a year an a half ago when for nostalgia's sake I looked up Masked Rider. Which led me to Kamen Rider which led me to toku all together. I really haven't been able to get into Sentai at all. And outside of Kamen Rider and Sentai I honestly haven't tried any other toku. I started with Kamen Rider Balck which I loved at first.......but then it got a little repetative. It was like the old Highlander show where the person just happens to know all these people. While I was able to kinda buy it in Highlander because Duncan was like 400. But i generaly like Kamen Rider Blakc i just whished there was more of an over arcing story. So then i started looking at some of the newer series. Ryuki caught my eye. And I liked what i saw of that. Which was abotu 10 eps. And i watched the first ep of Fiaz and Den-O. Now all three of these shows seemed pretty good (Fiaz showing the most promise atleast for only one ep). The problem is that i hate watching things ont eh comp and the subtitles are a little hard to read. Now i am up to ep six of Kiva and i ablosutly love that (it has actually made me laugh which none of the other shows did). And kiva's so godo i can put up with the hard to read subtitles. And because it's still relativly new i don't feel the need to watch all 60 eps or so close together because once i catch up i can watch them as they come out. So i guess this is all a round about way of saying can you point me in the direction of where i can get the DVD's (preferably whole series collections). I found Kamen Rider The First which i liked alot on ebay but i haven't really been able to find any of the series with english subtitles on the net. Sorry that this is so long of a post.

Check out the downloads forum to get some series to start with.
Try an Ultraman series or just get another KR. There's also the well known TVnihon.com

BUY Iron King, Ultraman, Super Robot Red Baron and if you can afford it, generationkikaida releases. Then, you'll support toku and help other people to get involved in this interesting hobby.

Supporting toku is the way to see more awesome things in the states (and eventually outside it as well).

Welcome! :)

As far as buying DVDs goes, with the exception of the few licensed R1 stuff which will have decent subtitles, most will probably be bootlegs and have HK English subs which are awful.

As far as Kamen Rider goes, for Faiz and onwards, you're much better off just downloading them and converting/burning to DVD, rather than paying out money for a poorer quality bootleg. Alternatively you can even get yourself a new DVD player that can handle playing back XviD/DivX .avi files, so you can burn a data disc and play them on your TV.

Though you say the subtitles are hard to read, how so? When watching on the computer, you're not trying to watch them in a small window are you?

Welcome to the fold, man!

HK DVD's were how I started out, but I finally got a good computer. But if you want some other good stuff to try out, Kamen Rider Blade, KR Kabuto, and now KR Kiva are the ones I highly recommend.

If you want a little fun outside of the big two, GARO is still the best of the very best when it comes to the genre in my book and you'll find a lot of fun out of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and Cutey Honey the LIVE.

Hope you enjoy your stay!

Welcome to the world of Toku.

Most people I know when the think Toku, they specifically think of Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai. But there are a lot of great series out there. GARO is indeed a great series. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was entertaining, and fun. Tomica Hero Rescue Force, a series that is currently airing is pretty decent. You should look into it.

No, I think it's fine to burn episodes on DVD's for personal use. I do it.

Now selling them is a different story.
