New to Toku

Old school Toho films are the best - Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, etc. Pretty much every one of them from 1954-1975 is solid gold in one way or another (except maybe Godzilla Vs. Megalon... :laugh: ).

Tokusatsu means "special effects." Technically, things like Star Wars are even tokusatsu since they are special effects films.

And Godzilla and Ultraman's creator, Eiji Tsuburaya, is known in Japan as being the "God of Special Effects." Toku in the sense that we discuss it (primarily Japanese SPFX films and TV) wouldn't be anything like it is today without Godzilla and Eiji Tsuburaya, I suspect.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the evolution goes a bit like this:

Godzilla -> DaiKaiju Craze -> Ultraman -> Giant hero craze -> Kamen Rider -> Henshin Hero craze -> Sentai

Or at least something roughly like that. I must admit that once I leave the Ultraman area of that timeline my knowledge gets increasingly fuzzier but that's what I've come to accept.

Welcome to the fold, man!

HK DVD's were how I started out, but I finally got a good computer. But if you want some other good stuff to try out, Kamen Rider Blade, KR Kabuto, and now KR Kiva are the ones I highly recommend.

If you want a little fun outside of the big two, GARO is still the best of the very best when it comes to the genre in my book and you'll find a lot of fun out of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and Cutey Honey the LIVE.
