I'm not a Trekkie either, but from what I can gather, it's a retelling of the Enterprise's origin story so you can go in knowing jackshit about any of it.

This is a reboot disguised as a sequel involving time travel and the creation of a side-reality. It's meant to give the original timeline a farewell whilst creating new possibilities for fresh audiences.
