We also have life forms that survive without sunlight in the depths of the ocean, living off the chemicals and heat expelled from the Earth's core. Combine those two and... bang! Any planet with a molten core could potential hide primitive life form o.o

I wonder what a more complex arsenic lifeform would look like.

Probably not that much of a difference at least on the level we are at now, considering the don't considering the bacterium seems to function the same. The importance of this is that forces us to face that our entire notion of life is based solely on what is familiar to us. This notion is a little obvious but one we don't like to dwell on much since it forces us to face one of our greatest fears: maybe we are that special. In addition the scientific implications there are the societal and philosophical parts to concern ourselves with, too. This could very well be one the biggest shifts in our cultural make-up since our acceptance of a heliocentric model.
 
What I mean is that different basic elements interact and combine in different ways to create different coumpound... and I'm wondering if there are substances that react in a way with phosphorus but don't with arsenic and vice versa and if that would be beneficial from an evolutionary stand point to lead to such a bacterium.

I am sure there is but really that is beyond the scope of this right now. You are asking questions that are well beyond where are at this point. You are asking how something would play out in an environment that we will probably never have access to.

You can't rush with something like this, something that could very well change biochemistry as we know it. Hell the discovery itself still needs to put through it's paces first. This is monumental to be sure but we can't get ahead ourselves. A lot the articles out are jumping the gun with this and what it could mean for this or that. I know this isn't as exciting but proving the discovery itself has to come first. Until then everything is meaningless.
 
Being someone that already believes in alien lifeforms, whether they're far away or not, I'm not that surprised, it had to happen.

That being said, I'm glad to see this kind of discoveries being made, this is big alright, and if everything goes well, by the 26th century all planets will already be inhabited and everyone will know the rest of the galaxies have their own lifeforms, society and whatnot.

Yep, I agree with you. But, are you sure that by the 26th century, all planets will be earth-like? I don't see that. It's too star trek.
