Um, because it's weird and unnatural and encourages giving free license to people to make whatever kind of eccentric decisions they want when some things should just be unacceptable for a reason. I can defend the relationship of a human being to another human being of any kind, but people marrying somebody's art homework just ain't right.

As long as the person is an adult, who cares what they do. If some one wants to marry a video game character, more power to them. No one has a right to tell another person they don't have a right to happiness is life.

They do if that happiness manages to infringe on someone else's. It sends the wrong message. An atheist might not see the big deal about extending the rights of marriage to anything and everything--gays, interracial couples, cartoon characters, animals, farm equipment--but marriage has its origins as a spiritual institution and its the people who hold their spiritual values very dear that take issues with what they see as the perversion of that institution's meaning. While I don't agree with it, this is the only defensible objection to gay marriage that I will even consider. I'm not religious enough to know how it feels to be fervently opposed to something that may degrade the traditions I put my faith in but many people are and claiming that those people don't deserve consideration isn't anybody's call either; that's one of the fundamental tenants of existential human rights that you just appealed to.

But even if marriage is not proposed, I don't think we should encourage this kind of behavior even if we're forced to accept it to accomodate every individual's capacity to determine what's right for their own lives. Like I said before, it's unnatural and I don't think it deserves approval. That may make me sound like some intolerant buzzkill, but if you think about it (I mean really think about it) for a minute you'll probably understand my position. If we don't instill certain practices with meaning and maintain the integrity of that meaning then eventually nothing will mean anything anymore and chaos will be the inevitable result. What's next? If it's other people's happiness that you're trying to evaluate, where do you draw the line? Are we going to allow it to be totally okay for people to be in relationships with corpses? Locations? What about concepts? I've got a hard-on for transcendentalism.

It also just seems like a blow to that individual's own dignity. I mean, how shameful do you have to be to develop romantic feelings for inanimate objects?
