Mario Kart World Is Switch 2’s Big Standout Title

When Nintendo first revealed the Switch 2, they hinted it would be launching with a new Mario Kart game, and that’s indeed the plan. Mario Kart World was unveiled in all its glory early this morning during the big Switch 2 Direct. And it looks impressive! For the first time ever, you’ll be able to go off-track without Lakitu scolding you. This Mario Kart World is an open world, with the entire area between tracks fully explorable on whatever vehicle you’re driving. It sounds like this will be part of the competition itself sometimes, as a new mode called Knockout Tour will add a cross-country battle royale to the mix. In addition, real-time shifting weather conditions can change strategies in a second. And everybody’s here! These tracks are wide enough to support 24 racers at once. Among the contestants in this trailer alone, we counted not just the main cast, but Boo, Nabbit, a Goomba, a Hammer Bro, Sidestepper, Chargin’ Chuck, Monty Mole, Para-Biddybud, Stingby, Pokey, Cataquack, Peepa, Spike, a dolphin, a penguin, even a Moo Moo and a Snowman. The only downside to Mario Kart World is….Nintendo wants eighty bucks for it. You might have heard about this already, from an […]

Okay, the idea of an open-world Mario Kart sounds pretty fun, but $80? Seriously? I get that Nintendo makes great games, but I’m just not sure it justifies the price tag. Sure, they’ve got a ton of characters and a new mode, but that’s a lot to ask, especially when we don’t even know what else the Switch 2 is offering yet. I guess if I buy the Switch 2 bundle I’ll get a slight discount, but even then, $500 for a console and a game is a pretty steep entry fee. It’s going to be hard for me to justify this one unless there’s something amazing in the game that we haven’t seen yet.

I have to say, the open world aspect of Mario Kart World is the most exciting part for me. I love open-world games and the freedom they offer, so I’m really curious to see how Nintendo handles that in a Mario Kart game. The Knockout Tour sounds like something I could really get into as well—kind of like a battle royale for racing, which is a unique concept. However, that price tag is rough. If I’m going to pay that much, I want to know that this game is going to be more than just a gimmick. I’ll be keeping an eye on future updates to see if it’s worth the investment.

I don’t know. I like the idea of a new Mario Kart, but there’s a lot about this that feels like it’s trying too hard. An open world? Sure, but do we really need it? I’m just hoping it doesn’t lose the essence of what makes Mario Kart great, which is the fun, tight racing. Also, that price… $80? For a Mario Kart game? It feels a bit like they’re trying to milk the franchise. I’ll probably still play it, but I’m not sure I’ll be jumping in on launch day. Nintendo could be pushing their luck here.
