crime rate against Singaporeans is very high in JB, because they have this general misconception Singaporeans are very rich (which is not true).
Singaporeans not only get robbed, but there are cases of Singaporeans getting raped in JB as well. i'm not sure about JB's own crime rate with regards to their own citizens though.
the misconception probably arises because when we go there, we are tourists, and tourists will certainly spend while abroad, especially the aunties who go there with gold chains and jade bracelets around their necks and wrists. these elderly are one of the biggest targets for robbery, even here.
we are concerned with this but due to the fact that we cannot stop Singaporeans from visiting JB, we hope that Singaporeans who do make the trip up take extra precautions and travel in groups, especially so for ladies. if you are Chinese, take more than extra precaution. yes, Singaporean Chinese are the main targets for tourist crime in JB.
you should be safer in the City Square area but don't expect too much favours from the PDRM if anything should happen.
most JBers are a friendly lot though.
