"Kamen" vs "Masked"

You know, I was wondering lately, why do we all refer to Kamen Rider as...well..."Kamen Rider"? I mean, yeah, I usually refer to it as that most of the time, but why don't people refer to it as "Masked Rider" that often, even though that's the official English title? Is it due to that one nightmare from '95 that we should just forget existed, or has it just become something were all used to? Just curious.

i think its to distinguish between the two...

i've grown up hearing both names so in my head its the same thing (prob cuz of KR V3 >_<)... but i tend to call things by what its called on the title screen... so KR i call KR and masked rider i call masked rider.... if that makes sense :3

I, personally like to say "Kamen". Saying "Masked" just brings that bad connotation of Saban's Masked Rider. *shivers*

Besides, fansubbers, fans, and merchandice sellers call it Kamen. The only time it's Masked is on the logo.

Also, we keep saying KR. MR just won't do.

I think it's just to keep the difference between the Japanese Version & English Version. I didn't think the '95 english was a "nightmare" or that bad.

i remember when masked rider first came on..i was super excited cuz there was going to be an american release of kamen rider (hey, at the time, that was the only one out of the bunch that i actually knew before getting into toku) hehe i remember i thought the show was weird with the alien thing and stuff going on..but i liked it ^^... but i was like ...8? or so? i don't remember :P

i remember asking my mom why they didn't call it kamen rider though :X

I still think Dex' debut as Masked Rider during the MMPR Season 3 trilogy was badass. But when he left from there it went downhill into a grave.

PR can MAKE but it cannot CREATE. Hense the reason why we still have PR and NOTHING else in North America.

Toei continues to use "Masked" though. So they are somewhat consistent, whenever they refer to the Rider's english name they will always have "Masked Rider" before it. Rarely have I seen them use "Kamen" (the English word) in most of the toys and titles.

Why? becuase I think most of us here are using the Japanese name not the English one. Plus I think its stupid to translate a name, you should always leave names as is. If a guy is named Ryu, then calling him Dragon would be very stupid IMO. Kamen Rider is a name thus translating it isn't a very good idea IMO.

Agreed!
