Hmmm, when I hear a situation like this.. I recall several quotes from the wise Strider Hiryu.
"A false life is equal to death. Be your true self!"
Ok, but some seriousness. I went through this ,somewhat, during High School. The big differences, I didn't hide who I am, or what I enjoyed. Be it anime, tokusatsu, video games or whatever else wasn't "mainstream" or "South Park" at the time. The big difference is, I was open about it and I discovered something else of complete interest about life.
When people tend to comment about shows people enjoy, I find an equal number of people are just --hiding-- the fact that they watch something they feel ashamed for watching, for whatever reason. When it became known in school I had every episode of sailor moon, I watched power rangers and their odd japanese verisons, I found myself having "jock" type guys walking up when no one else was around asking: "..So.. that Sailor Moon show.. what exactly happened after the Alex and Ann stuff.."
True that. Certain things are just more susceptible to being made fun of. When you think about, sports fans can be really nerdy too. Memorizing stats on a person who you'll never really meet? Come on.
I was just thinking that myself actually, though I forgot about how crazy the stat memorizing gets, my two friends will go back and forth throwing numbers, stats, plays people did, and switch sports. But also, what I was going to bring up that for example sports fan act exactly like anime fans, when half of them dress-up, paint their face, get their wigs, giant cheesehats etc.
But really, just be yourself, it's just highschool, highschool is more enjoyable when you can wake up, be yourself, do your thing and hang out with your real friends rather then wake up put on your fake face, develop your fake interests trying to fit in with the same people who you don't really want to be hanging around just for an 'image".
