Kamen Rider Gaim Ep 40 - "The Overlords Awaken"

Gaim isn't ending this month. Drive is only starting in October, so Gaim will have September too.
Right, right. That preview got me there for a minute.

Still...!

As NeonZ said, it looks like Gaim's going to get about 47 episodes. It's always around episode 40/41 that Rider suddenly kicks the plot into high gear. A lot of Rider shows seem to suffer a bit for this timing - some (like Kabuto) have to pull a last second extra enemy out to stretch to their required length, while some (like Faiz) have too much left to do and have to rush through it all at such a breakneck speed that you feel like half the planned events were truncated or dropped altogether. Gaim's got a lot to do in seven episodes - defeat Rosyuo, Redyue, Micchi and Ryoma, see Sagara play his game, have Kouta and Kaito become Over Lords, and hopefully bring that orange-haired girl into it somehow. Hopefully it gets the pacing right and pulls it all off.
Referring to this, there is still a TON they have left to cover. Hopefully they can, but I'm getting a bit worried - barring a few cases that felt like two or three episodes stuffed into one, one of the things I've loved about this show is its pacing. Really hoping this can hold true to the end for the most part.

It's not just a random monster suit though. It's the monster that Yuuya became back in the first episode, to complete the role reversal of Yuuya appearing as Gaim. The same suit was used with a different head to protray Hase's monster form, so it's essentially the form of a converted human and probably the monster form that's caused Kouta the most mental anguish throughout the series. I think Redyue's idea was that if Kouta could strike down Yuuya and accept being that particular monster, it would completely sever his emotional attachment to humanity. But he pushed it too far and Yuuya just reminded Kouta of what he was fighting for.
Fair enough.

Also, isn't Redue a girl?

If I had a complaint it's that Kouta was the guy who gave that big speech about how he'd remake the world into one where sacrifices were no longer required, and yet now he seems quite accepting that he is a sacrifice himself.
As another user pointed out, I think it's more that he doesn't view himself as a sacrifice at all - it's his choice.

Ryoma's actor is far too good to do a gremlin
Well, I mean more "underling steals the thing at the end and becomes the final boss" the same way Gremlin had. I suppose it could be Redue who does it too, though.

It's probably truer to say that Kouta's hallucination is how he imagines it was for Hase and Yuya. We can see that they'd basically lost their minds (it might've been a slower process for Hase, but it still happened), but it wouldn't surprise me if Kouta had twisted it in his head so that they were just bewildered, distressed, and unable to communicate, and he was a bloodthirsty monster who didn't try hard enough to communicate with them.
Well, as you point out, Hase actually did go through something like this before he fully transformed.

As for Yuuya, who's to say? Let's get crazy - he might have been trying to communicate with Kouta but then Kouta turns into this crazy samurai thing and starts attacking him. What else is he supposed to do at that point? Defend himself!

That all said, I'm pretty sure the whole thing was something Redue make up and showed Kouta to try to convince him to change sides rather than Kouta's imagination. Hence the "hypnosis" they kept referring to.

I'm more intrigued with Kouta's dialogue:

"This future could have happened"

Is this Urobuchi's message to the fans that have been clinging to the scene in the 1st episode? If so, damn you Urobuchi!!!

That kick from Kaito...... I foresee a future where someone will idolizes him in a Chuck Norris-style. Seriously how come Kaito kicking a machine can causes it to malfunction, but when I do it all I get is a stupid pain and a broken foot?

[HIDE]This episode seems to give a vibe that Urobuchi could follow the direction of Fairy Tail's Edolas finale where Mystogan and Natsu is having a showdown in front of the public so they are convinced that Mystogan is an ideal leader to lead all the despairing Edolas people. With this plot Urobuchi is free to choose his 'Mystogan' and 'Natsu'.[/HIDE]

Kouta's hallucination is less about about "This is what it feels likes to become an Invess" and more Redyue torturing Kouta to break him.

I'm pretty sure Kouta just meant that it could have happened had Yuuya become Gaim instead of him. It was more getting back to his guilt over how he feels like he "stole" Yuuya's life than any attempt to touch on parallel worlds.

I do think there might be parallel worlds brought up later on, but that line wasn't meant for them in this context.

Remember that this hallucination is made by Redyue in an attempt to persuade Kouta to join forces with the Overlords. Maybe she has access to his memory when she hypnotised her. But she was definitely using Kouta's memory of Yuya and Hase and manipulating in a way so that Kouta was viewing in the Invess perspective, however it is very likely that in reality Yuya and Hase did lose their humanity and weren't thinking logically like Kouta did. Notice how everything seemed too idealistic and cheesy at the end of the dream and characters popping in and out (Knuckle and Malika were good examples), it's all to aid Redyue's 'dream world' to convince Kouta that humans are not worth protecting.

Honestly I think it's probably meant to be deliberately ambiguous to the audience as well as to Kouta, and will stay that way. I know while watching it I genuinely wasn't sure if Hase and Yuuya really did feel that way during their own transformations, and the fact that I wasn't sure made me feel ten times more anxious than I would have if I was certain of the answer. The fact that we can't be sure makes it easier to place ourselves in Kouta's shoes.

Is the fact that Kaito wears his belt all of the time. Keeping him from already transforming into a Invess? And seeing that it was a Over Lord (weapon) which infected him in the first place. Does that mean he's going to become a Over Lord himself? Episode 37 seems to be hinting that he's going to get a upgrade or something. :hmm:

Gaim 40:

- Why is Rouma calling Redyue "him"?

- "I'll turn you into fruit juice!" Strangest threat ever.

- Kaito just kicks the machine and it breaks? You could have at least had him fiddle with it for a while before going "screw it" and beat it into submission.

- Interesting that Kouta's illusion takes place on the spot Hase died. Though why not where Yuuya died, I wonder?

That's kind of the theme that is being thrown around. In order to save humanity from the forest, one must become an Overlord to wield the Fruit of Knowledge but we are still left in the dark about all that. We are told there are only two choices that Kouta must make, save yourself or save humanity. Redyue was trying to make Kouta crack by showing him what he never wanted to see, being portrayed as a monster by his friends and humanity even though he is trying to help. We know from the very beginning that is all Kouta wants to do, he is a very selfless person. Redyue knew this and used it against him but end up failing. I feel there is much more to this than what is being laid out on the table.
