Kamen Rider DVD/Blu-Ray Questions

Oh kind sir, would you please tell someone who is but a simple peasant how he may spot these?

Unless they are like the Universe Laser releases of Godzilla, many of the Kamen Rider dvds I've seen if any toku are only subbed in Chinese, and if English you face the region barrier which can easily be overcome.

The only legit R1 release is V3 , and that is including the AMERICAN versions.

And unless Kamen Rider catches on here and the owner is super-fine with releasing the Japanese versions here before and after V3 for a reasonable and profitable price [The remake/adapt has to be EXTREMELY popular] , I don't see them coming along.

There is simply not much of a market for any retro-Toku releases unless the show takes a few dramatic successes that allows such DVDs to be released. And even then, it might only be Black on as with Power Rangers being from Zyu on as those are the markets to cater to.

The first thing Toei needs to realize is that the pricing method in Japan FAILS here in comparison to the competition For anime, Bandai Visual fell apart versus Viz and FUNi. This means their show is far from a valuable asset if of any value at all versus their main consistent output that is Power Rangers and they need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize that.

The other thing is that they also need to realize is that of right now, the only form of tokusatsu recognized here is Power Rangers and with zero product differentiation in the marketplace,Toei is fighting an uphill battle with others to redefine and quash this mentality. This development will not happen unless they market Kamen Rider to a wholly different crowd of teenagers and young adults or marketed it as a family series like Avatar where anyone can watch it. If Smallville succeeded , why not Kamen Rider?


The barrier I see is lack of vision and the lack to tackle a ripe continent of little competition where right now, there are not much of any superhero programs to compete with and with a sorta decent budget, you just take the suits, film a different [mostly] story and use a little of the stock footage if needed.

As I said before, isn't simply having ACCESS to your favorite show the single most basic expression of fandom? It shouldn't be considered a collectible in my mind.

Toei doesn't care what you think, because you're a foreigner. If you lived in Japan, you could have access to the shows cheaply without buying DVDs. That DVD purchase prices are inconvenient for foreigners is... well, just not something Toei will ever care about. It's frustrating, and it's unfair, but it's just how the market works.

Maybe he meant series? You can't really 'collect' all the DVDs if there's just one.

At least The First is relatively cheap. V3 is $150...and without a couple episodes fansubbed how does one even know if it's worth that? Glamador didn't much like X or Amazon, which come after V3...too bad Stronger onwards don't have official DVDs.

Buy the Hong Kong Subbed version for 15 bucks. If you like it then Upgrade to the Region 1 version for 150 bucks. 15 Dollars is nothing to sample an epic show like this.

I was just remembering how much I wanted to find sets for the Japanese dubs of Beast Wars, Beast Machines, Transformers prime.

Why would you want the Japanese dubs of American shows? Especially Transformers.

Yeeaahhh...that's taking Weaboo to new levels. Unless you happen to be a native Japanese speaker and it's easier for you to understand the spoken language.

You may be thinking of Robots in Disguise or Beast Wars 2 which were Transformers cartoons made in Japan.

Watching Japanese dubs of American shows is also good for Japanese practice. Or that's what I tell myself when I watch the Japanese dub of Dragon Knight.

If I was going to get a region free player, it would have to be region free blu ray that also does region free for DVD. Not to mention it would only be a replacement when mine breaks.

Kind of jumping back a couple pages/months in the thread - but Japan and the US are in the same region for Blu-ray. No need to get a region free Blu-ray player unless you plan to purchase discs from other regions (like Europe).

I forgot about it simply. It's actually a part of my collection. :eyebrow:

Also , it didn't feel it was on topic because it wasn't a series, but it sucks "The Next" never came here while on the topic of the film.

I wish budget sets were released of the Showa Riders because I'd love to support the official versions, though I could just jump to V3 as The First already covered that. I just want an Amazon DVD set because its a series I could watch time and time again.

@toranoko, not sure if watching a Japanese dub of a foreign show would help learning Japanese other than it being a mere curiosity. I could imagine if people went off this kind of learning, we'd have botched versions of Japanese spoken where the lip movements are more in common with the English than the actual Japanese, looking awkward as heck. Firefly comes in mind.

Not mocking you, but while I love the idea, it becomes problematic. Just use it as a reference of pronunciation, but watch some normal J-dramas and the news if you got access to it.

The DVD's/Blu-Ray's for Sentai & Kamen Rider are quite expensive. And if you must buy these, buy only the ones for the shows that you enjoy the most. Don't just buy all of the shows for the sake of collecting. My favorite shows from Sentai would be
