I doubt Renn Kiriyama would come back for a V-Cinema special, so unless they go right back and cast a younger actor to play him as a teen, we probably won't find out any more about Shotaro. I think the idea with him is that he is the most "normal" of the main characters, so unlike Philip, Akiko and Terui (who have family issues) we don't hear about his family simply because they're not noteworthy

Why? He loved playing Shotaro.

I think giving Shotaro a deeply fleshed-out backstory would damage his status as an everyman. I'm actually really glad they never went into it, personally, and hope they never do.

His backstory doesn't need to be that overly dramatic for that matter. It's just that it would be so unfair if he's practically the ONLY ONE among the main characters who doesn't have a story of his own (we only knew he was once a rascal of some sort, based on that Diamond subarc).

^ Right. There could be a story that shows him first encountering Dopants and fighting Masqerade Dopants in which he remembers his principle as a child to never let anyone else in the city cry. He could then vow to do anything to stop the Dopants despite not having their power.

I wouldn't mind a story like that, but I don't think it's necessary. Shotaro is the kind of guy where it's clearly more important who he is now than where he came from. I would argue that Akiko is the same way -- we know she's Sokichi's daughter, but we really know nothing about her mother and her life in Osaka, and very little about her relationship to her father.

This is in contrast to Philip and Ryu, who are defined almost entirely by their Big Backstory Event.
