I like Kabuto. It's not one of my favorites, but in Kamen Rider terms that just means it's not in my top 5 and I still enjoy it. :laugh:
It's also still "new" enough that I can't say if it's due for a reevaluation yet, like other shows where I end up liking them a whole lot more after a few years have passed and I watch them again. What I thought about it in 2007 stands. It has problems, but I never found it dull. It has an interesting premise and I always wanted to see what came next.
If anything, I think it was slightly burdened by the anniversary series status put on it, and expectations were doubly high. I would have gone further in one direction or the other (make it more anniversary-ish, or less.)
I will say though that if nothing else, it had some fantastic set pieces. Kabuto had a way of making its big moments feel big. It had some high concept ideas which I loved. It might have aimed too high in the end, but it mostly hit the marks.
...and it had some great toys.

In hindsight, Kabuto was okay at best. It had some really great stuff to it but a lot of the rest of it felt like a bungled mess. Den-O's first episode was amazing (I lol'd very hard) but then the rest of it all felt like filler episodes than anything very good. Kiva... It also had its moments but in the end it too felt very bland - aside from Nago/iXA, it's definitely not as entertaining to me as Kabuto. Decade's been fun so far with lots of great highs (and my favorite modern rider design) - but also a few really low moments that remind me how Toei's really sold their soul to Bandai (Final Form Rides, anyone?).
I dunno, maybe I'm biased but the recent Rider series are mostly just fun diversions to me at best. Nothing really satisfying. :/
