Jumping the Shark in Tokusatsu

The only time I've experienced a shark-jump feeling with tokusatsu is Kabuto, when Drake first showed up.

EDIT: It's a shark-jump moment if, after the scene in question, you never really enjoy the show again in quite the same way. So if the appearance of Kohana made it hard for you to enjoy the rest of Den-O, that's a shark-jump moment.

I seen 'The Fonz' do that on Happy Days

And if you read the initial couple posts, you'd know that that's how the phrase got coined in the first place.

Anyway, to me, that'd be Decade. starting the Rider War World at the latest (I was a newcomer then, so, eh) -- it's just, so out there in so many regards -- you can really tell that they really just wanted to get it over with. The movies failed to fix any of that -- hell, many parts of it don't even seem to connect at all to the series finale. … OR the series itself.

Godzilla

Of course, the most hardcore fans would argue that Godzilla nuked the fridge after the first film, others say Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster (because Godzilla stopped being a villain), etc. As a fan of the first series of films, Godzilla (Toho; 1984), the first film in the second series, was where the franchise nuked the fridge, IMHO. The SPFX are among the best ever in the series, but God, the story was a mixed bag of epic proportions. They tried to return Godzilla to being a villain, but he comes off being more like the original Gamera than the atomic demon from 1954! (He only crushes cities because he's clumsy.) Not to mention that the character of Dr. Hayashida (Yousuke Natsuki) was a grown-up version of Toshio Sakurai (the kid from the first Gamera film). The rest of the films after that, especially in the third (and last) film series, are hit-and-miss.

Gamera

This is difficult to determine where it nuked the fridge, because I actually enjoyed all of the Gamera films (except for Gamera Vs. Barugon, which was WAAAY too dark for my tastes; with the exception of that film, all other films are more consistent with each other). I also enjoyed Shuusuke Kaneko's Heisei Gamera Trilogy (although G2 was my least favorite of the three; the other two are great)! I've only seen bits of Gamera the Brave to date, though I was impressed with what I saw.

Ultra Series

If you want to be really anal about it, some fans thought Return of Ultraman, Episode 38 ("When the Ultra Star Shines"), was where that series jumped the shark (though one could argue that Return of Ultraman was where it jumped the shark in general for tampering with the timelines of the previous series!). But personally, I'd say that Ultraman Ace was where it jumped the shark. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's got some great moments (Jared will go on and on about it!), but compared to the previous shows, this is the point where the Ultra Series becomes more like Hanna-Barbera's Superfriends shows. BUT, it's faaaaar more entertaining and exciting than the Superfriends shows!

Masked Rider Series

For me, it jumped the shark with Masked Rider Black RX. And it never got better after that...

Super Sentai Series

Ninja Task Force Kakuranger. Nuff' said.

I thought the show everyone loved to hate in that respect was Ohranger?

I still say Gaoranger is the moment where it went majorly downhill for Sentai. I like Gaoranger, but it was the series where the merchandising (100 Power Animals) and fanservice (hello there GaoSilver!) started to overtake plot and substance. A couple more of my personal "shark jump" moments:

- The cat episode of Shinkenger. I think it is one of the most stupid episodes ever written for television. If Power Rangers copies it, I'll rip my hair out
- Hikaru's appearance in Magiranger
- Yuuto's appearance in Den-O
- The entire Dogun V series. Should've left it at Dogu-chan

Most fans tend to like Ohranger, at least the early serious stuff and the KingRanger stuff. Ohranger has a lot of truly unfortunate filler episodes, but most people willing to watch old unsubbed shows don't much mine.

I don't dislike Shinkenger? But man, this episode was incredibly stupid. It's the only episode of the show I genuinely dislike, as opposed to just finding it okay.

UHHH Thats not toku

I'm sure Kaiju knows. Happy Days is a series that pretty much made most of the most memorable catchphrases of that time that are still used today.

Oh, Decade. :nono: I was thinking of writing a fanfiction to fix Decade and many of you know that I'm not interesting in reading or writing fanfictions.

If Supernatural counts as a Special Effects series and all, that's number one for jumping the shark for me.
