Julie Phillips was taken straight from court to jail this morning to serve one day behind bars after pleading guilty to helping her teenage daughter and a friend write vulgar slurs about a classmate on disposable diapers and tossing them in the girl’s yard a year ago.

“You participated in a childish act with these girls and the impact of your actions caused great emotional harm to other people,†Monroe Circuit Judge Marc Kellams told the 51-year-old Bloomington woman. “This was pure meanness. I will never understand it.â€

While the probation department recommended that Phillips be put on probation and not spend any time in jail, the judge disagreed.

He acknowledged that this is the first time Phillips has been in trouble with the law. “Under typical circumstances, I would agree with the recommendation,†Kellams said. “But your behavior on that day was almost beyond belief ... beyond bad judgment. This sentence may be a token of sorts, but I know it will be a significant experience for Ms. Phillips. I think there should be accountability.â€

Phillips was charged with two misdemeanors: harassment and trespassing. She pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and the other charge was dismissed. She will be on probation for one year and must complete 100 hours of community service work.

“She can take a terrible wrong and try to make some good of it for others,†the judge said.

Phillips’ daughter and her friend, who were 15 when the incident occurred, were referred to juvenile authorities for their part in the crime.

According to police, Phillips bought the diapers and helped the girls carry out their scheme. She admitted driving the teens, who both were freshmen at Bloomington High School North, to the victim’s house to distribute the diapers. They had the words “slut,†“bitch,†“whore†and other derogatory terms written on them.

The 15-year-old girl who was targeted was so distraught and embarrassed after the incident that she attempted suicide. A lawsuit filed on the girl’s behalf seeking compensation for medical care, psychological damage and legal fees is pending.

The victim and her mother were present in court. Kellams granted their request for a no-contact order to keep Phillips away from the family and their home.
