I believe that was the case exactly. The walls were made of some sort of fabric and it ended up costing in excess of $1000 IIRC.Knowing those types of walls in hotels, the walls had to be replaced.
Convention organizers should certainly have some rules set in place since that incident prohibiting anything that could possibly make a mess, but an outright ban seems unnecessary. However, items were being auctioned off to pay the expenses so it isn't like either one of those guys stepped up and said, "Hey, we messed it up so we'll pay for it."
EDIT: I see where The 2nd Evil posted the actual dollar amount for the damages. Wow. Way more than I thought.
