What I've heard is that the title as intended is a multi-layered pun. That is, in addition to go + ranger, the title is also punning off the Japanese word goren + ranger.
Basically, Toei uses Gorenger everywhere (when they use the latin alphabet that is). But western fans have decided that this is just an example of Engrish and prefer to use Goranger.
It really comes down to: is Gorenger a mistake that has stuck or was it intentional (because it was a pun on something)?
