Rourke and Rockwell are the Iron Man 2 Villains!
Source:The Hollywood Reporter, Variety January 7, 2009

Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Sam Rockwell (Frost/Nixon) are in talks to star as the villains in Marvel Studios' Iron Man 2, being directed by Jon Favreau from a script by Justin Theroux, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

THR says that Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils. Variety adds that Rourke would play the Crimson Dynamo. "He's considered to be an evil version of Iron Man because he battles the superhero in a nuclear-powered suit of armor," says the trade.

Rockwell would play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, being played by a returning Robert Downey Jr.

Rourke and Rockwell would be joining a cast that also includes the returning Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, who is replacing Terrence Howard.

Another part -- one for Stark's assistant Natasha -- is still open.

Looks like they are tiptoeing around Mandarin.

Rockwell is awesome. Rourke seems like a good villain choice too...been wanting to see The Wrestler but not playing anywhere near me. Good news though. :)

Looks like they are tiptoeing around Mandarin.

Na. They just want to leave the Mandarin for the final movie. You know they're going to make at least one more. Besides, they hinted that the leader of that terrorist group might be him in the first movie. They were called The Ten Rings, and he compared himself to Gingis Kahn.

This one better have Titanium Man in it. Otherwise, I can't really see a reason for War Machine.

Updates:

And Rourke is official:
Quote:

Mickey Rourke has closed his deal to play the Russian villain in "Iron Man 2."

His involvement was expected (Daily Variety, Jan. 7), but dealmaking was arduous after Marvel Entertainment offered "The Wrestler" star only $250,000 for his first major studio film in years.

Rourke's salary will be now better than that.

While his ICM rep, David Unger, battled for more dough, Rourke's encounters with "Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr. on the awards circuit sealed his participation in the film.

Rourke won the Golden Globe and was Oscar nominated for "The Wrestler" and Downey got Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for "Tropic Thunder," so Downey used each occasion to recruit Rourke.

When Downey, Rourke as well as actors including Frank Langella and Anne Hathaway took part in a roundtable discussion with Newsweek's David Ansen, Downey interrupted the proceedings, reached across the table and flat out asked Rourke to do "Iron Man 2."

Rourke also met with Jon Favreau and scribe Justin Theroux and got to be part of the development of his character. He'll play Whiplash, a character that includes elements from that comicbook villain and Crimson Dynamo, another Russian baddie.

Marvel wouldn't confirm Rourke's involvement, but he's planning to join Downey, Sam Rockwell and Samuel L. Jackson, with Scarlett Johansson the frontrunner to play the Black Widow.

Scarlett Johansson is joining the superhero set.

Her rep confirms that the actress has signed on to play Black Widow in the Iron Man sequel opposite Robert Downey Jr. The deal was signed this afternoon.

"Scarlett is thrilled to be a part of Iron Man," her rep, Marcel Pariseau, tells me.

So now her and her Husband (Ryan Reynolds) are part of the Marvel movie universe.

It seems like a good choice, she's never been one of my favorite actresses but I don't think she's a bad actress.

Meh. I find her one of the most overrated, overexposed actress since J Lo. I would have prefered Eliza Dushku(someone who actually wanted the part) or Olga Kurylenko. I'll still go see IM2 but I'm a little disappointed with their casting decision for this role.

I hope she doesn't Jessica Alba this thing up.

Hold up, Rourke is playing both Whiplash AND Crimson Dynamo? :sly:

All they need is The Mandarin and then this'll be just like the 90's cartoon.
