I'm having troubles with my iPod

That's too bad. Try this: 32-bit And 64-bit
And then rename to m4v if you must. I think you can select and m4v output, but I don't have it at hand right now, and I can't remember off the top of my head.

Ah. Did you try a quick conversion from it?
Let me rephrase that. Did you encode it from mp4 to mp4?
That sounds dumb...

Try this one. It's crashed when I've opened it so I can't tell you much about it.
XVid4PSP

Umm... It's an exe file, so I doubt it'll work on mac. If I could just get Wine running, i could probably do it, but Wine no longer is working for me...

I guess I'll need to convert them at a friend's or something.

The problem is that while your iPod uses the .mp4 file container for video, there are codec discrepancies that prevent them from working on it.

If you're using Mac, try iSquint, it's free. iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and Quicktime Pro are better, but they cost money or piracy skills.

EDIT: Try out Handbrake or ffmpegX
