I Played a PS3.

So... played Cade's PS3 aaaaannnd.... still not impressed. Thought Warhawk would make me jealous, but yeah... not a world changer.. seems like a nifty toy, which ain't a bad thing or a slight. Just not the epic battle game I thought.

Guns don't hold much weight and blazing fire across the battle field just doesn't have enough of much of a visceral feel to it.

Main complaint... what's up with the PS3 controllers? Compared to the 360, Wii and even the Logitech PS2 controllers, the PS3 controller feels fwickin' out of date. The bottom triggers are best desribed as "slippy". They got smart people over at Sony and while the boomerang wasn't hot, they could have stood to at least try and re-design the controller for added comfort and better usage. With the Dual Shock 3, now with "outdated" rumble.... why not punch up the design a bit.

And the rechargable battery in the controller....... once that runs out, do you just have to buy another controller?

PS3's no doubt got the power, but for me it's still got a long way to go for me to consider the bucks worth it.

Sony's got all the money in the world. Why would they just leave their controllers so basically the same with no tactile improvements? And why would they have those triggers sloping inward like that, making it easy for the fingers to slip off?

I like Resistance, but I noticed at this moment what I felt was missing from the experience. The lack of rumble when your blasting a biggy gun like what I saw on the screen does kinda disconnect you from the experience. Great visuals and graphics and gun choice... all good, but yeah, the lack of rumbling while your swinging and gunny is definately noticable.

The game "Blast-a-tron" that's their version of Geometry Wars, I forget the name, but yeah.... that was pretty farkin' cool. I love me some Geometry Wars as I enjoy the zen feeling of becoming one with the music, sound and gameplay, but "Super Asteroids HD" looks far more involved and impressive. The ability to change your guns, charge through targets and the arrival of bosses was nothing short of nifty. GW is said to be the next gen of Asteroids, but "Super Defenise Hyper ****" would be the holder of that title. Will this be PS3 exclusive forever?

Anyway, there's my take... I'm betting on a two year time period where the PS3 will finally be stacked to the point of needing it, but for now... I still want a Wii.

I traded in all my unused back log of consoles and games and got a PS3 and 360Elite for £300 a few weeks ago, so I can officailly say the PS3's nothing special. Since the usual mediocre laucnh titles there has barely been anything but ports, I'm only keeping it connected for the rerelease of the whole Lego Star WArs saga.

Hey at least you got to try it. I havent played a PS3 yet but I think the system itself is good. It just doesnt have the games to back up it's power yet

It definately has the power, that's for sure. From what I hear, Sony's in for the long run and not worried about the now. What they're hoping is that they can stack all their chips juuuuust right, so that three years down the line the system's unstoppable and nobody else has the tech to keep up or take 'em down.

As it stand now, I'd be mad as hell if I got suckered into buying one of these at launch while the 360 owners were playing Gears of War, HALO, Bioshock and the rest of the killer library the 360's got.

What I do find inexcusable is that controller. Sony's got more money than god, and they could afford to have improved it. No idea why it's still the same with broke triggers and that they're carrying it over to the DualShock 3, when they could've really upgraded the thing.

If you're not gonna play MGS4, there's no reason to have a PS3, end of story. The only reason I dropped $600 on the piece of crap is because I need to play MGS4 the moment it comes out and I don't know how to spend money :buttrock:

Sorry I didn't get to show you everything I wanted to, but you basically just got a smattering of Warhawk, Resistance and a couple PSN games.

Well, like I'd said, Warhawk's no killer app. It's a damn finely refined multiplayer deathmatch game, but nothing more. It does what it does very well but that's about it.

As far as controllers go...I hated the L2/R2 triggers at first, but now I actually like them better. I'd probably still prefer a concave trigger design that the convex one they used, but I'm fine with it now. I'm in complete agreement that the things need rumble. Thank God it's coming, but so far after the fact it isn't even funny. At least older games will get patched to use it. I suppose the design could've been updated, but the Dual Shock is arguably one of the best designed controllers of all time (new triggers notwithstanding) so I'm not mad they're keeping it. I still prefer it to the 360's pad, mostly because of the better buttons and I prefer the DS layout.

I believe you can replace the battery, but I'm not positive. One charge lasts around 30 hours and the battery has a very long life so I don't really see it being an issue.

Blast Factor is PS3's answer to Geometry Wars. It's similar in theory, you've got closed arenas (albeit smaller) and waves of enemies that warp in. BF also gives you a slow-mo bomb that zooms in on the action and stuns enemies as well as a "wave" that pushes all enemies to the left or right when you tilt the controller. We played it 4-player using a downloadable add-on pack. Chaotic, but fun.

Super Stardust HD is in a class all it's own. It's been compared to GW, but that's not really fair. GW is great, but it's very simple. Blast, bomb, dodge. That's about it. SSHD gives you 3 weapons to select from which are upgradeable, a dash manuever and the mandatory bombs as well as all the combo and chaining nonsense you've come to expect in this type of game. It was built from the ground up on PS3 to take advantage of it's Cell processor so it's probably doubtful you'll see this on anything else.

Anyway, I still prefer the PS3 to the 360 overall. As lame as it sounds, the PS3 "feels" better to me as a system. I love the interface and ease of use. Free online which so far has been far less laggy for me than 360. Game-sharing of downloadable titles. Being able to get into the Japanese PSN store to buy PS1 imports. Upscaling of PS1 and PS2 titles. Copying downloaded PS1 titles to PSP. Upscaling DVD's. I suppose the Bluray player too even though I really haven't done much with that yet. Hell, just being able to use my PS2 controllers and arcade sticks with an adapter is a huge plus to me.

I'll get flamed for this, but I don't see much of a killer library on the 360. Sure it has a lot of games and more AAA titles than PS3, but in my opinion a lot of it's library is garbage. Then again, most of the 360's library consists of games I'm not fond of or interested in playing, so take that with a grain of salt. I have a 360 mainly for Live Arcade, but even there I've found there isn't as much as I thought there'd be.

Where 360 completely trounces the PS3 is Live. It's just so damn easy to get connected to someone to chat or join them in a game it's horrible to go back to the PS3's system. Supposedly that'll be changing sometime in the near future since Sony is supposed to be making massive changes and improvements to the user interface. Obligatory 360 dig: I'd hope Live would be better since you have to pay for it.

Overall I think the PS3 is now about where the 360 was after it's first year. A handful of really good games and a working, but unfinished online network.

"And the rechargable battery in the controller....... once that runs out, do you just have to buy another controller?"

Heh you didn't read the manual did you keith :P It's usb. You charge the controler by plugging it into the system while the system is on. But IMO that is a design flaw as 1. The usb cord is to short if you have to charge while playing and 2. I hate the controller anyway :P

I tried an Xbox360 at a Wanpaku store once ... it froze after two minutes and I just gave up. :P

... I also wonder why Microsoft can't make a more ergonomical controller, you know, them having all that money and engineers and such...

Design flaw? It's USB so you can charge it on ANYTHING that has a USB port. I usually charge them on my PC since it's usually on. It does suck that the PS3 has to be on to charge it, but you don't actually have to be playing it.

Any USB cable with a mini-plug will work, here's a 6ft. cable for $1.51:

I just don't like the PS3. I had one for about a month, and then I returned it. The games are awful, the online store and gaming is annoying, the so called backwards compatibility is a huge joke. I am happy with my PS2 and PS1. Maybe some day sony will have some good games out for the ps3, but as long as it costs more than 400 bucks it's not worth it. Say what you want about nintendo, at least they pack in free games with the wii.
