how can i tell if its Sentai footage

Overdrive, Jungle Fury, RPM: Watch out for pan and scan, if something has been cropped awkwardly or squashed, it's Japanese footage. HD started with Boukenger, so it's not an issue for Mystic Force or earlier, and PR adopted the same tech as Sentai starting with Samurai.

MMPR through Time Force: grainy footage is Sentai footage. Even the In Space and Zeo morphs are partly Sentai footage, as is Lost Galaxy's in the Lightspeed team-up.

Zord fights: usually Sentai footage, with the following exceptions - Lost Galaxy/Space team-up, Astro Megazord and Galaxy Megazord fight together. Thunderzords vs Repellator and Rito in A Friend in Need part 3 and Ninja Quest part 1. SPD's finale. RPM's finale. I'm sure there are others, but it's rare. Before anyone mentions it, Season 2's Dragonzord vs Tigerzord doesn't count, that was spliced footage, not US footage.

They should've though. With Special, have Camo doing "Rider Piledriver" on Sting and Wing Knight; JTC fighting Ritchie, and Kit turning into Wing Knight...

...with RVA...take out Agito Ground/Burning Agito...and then Wing Knight, Torque, and Strike doing the "WE ARE KAMEN RIDER!!!" sentai pose with Kit going...WTF.

that idea could have saved the series from cancellation...

I think another to tell the difference is that when I saw most of the Disney-era of the Power Rangers, I noticed that the stock footages were placed in a full-screen format which explains why they were pan and squashed together, but they couldn't actually keep up with the HD Format of the scenes.

Now for Sentai, I think Saban had the pre-HD ideas with the shinier suits and grimmer footages which shows that are more respective in adapting most Tokusatsu shows. Whereas now, it's almost close to noticing the format of the stock footages in its' original form. But I think that's me of course.

Also if you see Japanese civilians running around in the background, its probably Sentai footage. I noticed this when I saw the samurai rangers confronting the usual giant monster in one ep.

Well for Samurai's case in particular, the shinkenger footage has the suits looking pretty shiny but a bit faded in color. Like there are times when red comes off as orange compared to the american footage.
