Ghostface: A Killer Crossover That Falls Flat In a surprising twist, the horror icon Ghostface has been unveiled as one of the first DLC characters for Mortal Kombat 1’s Kombat Pack 2. While the timing for a Halloween release might seem fitting, this particular killer feels a bit out of place in the realm of gods, demons, and interdimensional warriors. For those who purchased the Khaos Reigns DLC, The Villain of the Scream Franchise will be available for early access on December 19th, alongside female versions of Cyrax and Sektor. While these additions are certainly intriguing, Ghostface’s inclusion raises some questions. While horror icons like Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, and Jason Voorhees have previously graced the Mortal Kombat stage, This slasher killer feels like an odd choice. His cinematic origins involve stalking and murdering teenagers in Scream Franchise, a far cry from the superhuman abilities and cosmic powers that define the Mortal Kombat universe. Ghostface Teaser The Scream franchise’s final girls, Sydney, Tara, and Sam, are ordinary human beings who, through sheer determination and a bit of luck, have managed to outsmart and defeat various Ghostface killers. It’s hard to imagine a character like Ghostface, who relies on stealth and […]

Honestly, I’m not thrilled by this choice. Ghostface is a horror icon, sure, but his presence feels odd in the world of Mortal Kombat. The likes of Freddy or Jason had supernatural, almost invincible qualities that matched MK’s tone. Ghostface, on the other hand, is just a person behind a mask. It makes me wonder how they’ll justify him taking on the likes of Raiden or Liu Kang. For me, this feels like a crossover for the sake of a crossover.

Well, he is an easy copyright to license—that’s probably why Ghostface shows up as a guest character in so many games. Other horror icons often come with complex rights issues or shared ownership that can turn the licensing process into a nightmare. Compared to that, Ghostface is simpler, making him an appealing choice for game developers who want to add a familiar face without the legal headaches. While he might seem out of place in the high-stakes, supernatural world of Mortal Kombat, his inclusion could just be a practical decision to avoid the complications that come with other franchises. It’s less about perfect thematic fit and more about what’s feasible behind the scenes

Honestly, the whole debate about whether Ghostface fits into Mortal Kombat’s universe feels a bit overblown. Canon doesn’t even come into play here since he’s not part of the story mode. Guest characters like Ghostface are included for fun and variety, not to blend seamlessly into the lore. It’s more about having a unique roster that keeps players entertained. So while he might seem out of place to some, it’s not like he’s rewriting MK’s narrative.

Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade are technically the human characters in Mortal Kombat, but let’s be real—they’re humans with superhuman feats. Their punches can shatter steel and diamond, and they go toe-to-toe with gods and sorcerers without breaking a sweat. If we’re sticking to strict canon, Ghostface wouldn’t stand a chance; he’d be outmatched and taken out by even the most 'ordinary' human fighters. While he might be a cool addition for gameplay’s sake, it’s hard to overlook that he’d be demolished by the very characters who are supposed to be on the more grounded side of the power scale.

What some people don’t realize is that the Scream franchise doesn’t actually own Ghostface. The character is owned by a costume company named Funtime, which is why parodies like Scary Movie have their own take on the mask. Even in Dead by Daylight, their Ghostface isn’t tied to the Scream films but is an original creation. So, for Mortal Kombat, it’s possible they could craft their own version of Ghostface, making him more than just a human killer. Maybe this Ghostface isn’t even human but something more sinister. Since the costume itself doesn’t come with attached lore, NetherRealm has a lot of creative freedom to mold their version in a way that fits MK’s over-the-top, brutal world.
