I'll be able to talk about this in more detail someday, but the fact is that the series started off as something totally different. How much could we re-design Mazinger Z? Would Koji Kabuto make an appearance? How would we work in Great Mazinger and Getta Robo? These early days represented a period where our daydreams spiraled out of control.

Once Yasuhiro Imagawa came aboard as director and things officially started moving forward, we started to realize that it worked better as something closer to the original comic book version, and we started exploring the idea that perhaps Mazinger Z looked pretty much the same as he always had, but with all new attacks and weapons.

It's funny how they say that comment about following the manga repetitively regarding Shin Mazinger, but almost every manga scene there was either unimportant or just felt tacked on. They basically ended up as attempts at fan service.

The 3 mecha beast battle, the Lorelei arc, the hot springs scene, Sayaka's defeat by Ashura later on... that was basically the amount of manga content in the anime. Mostly battles in entirely different contexts or a few irrelevant scenes.

Still, I can't believe they made Shin Mazinger instead of Getter Robo. Sure, Getter Robo has been getting alot of anime recently, but Mazinger gets alot of attention as it is. I want a new Getter anime dammit! One where the characters from different universes crossover to battle a new threat, like Ryoma and his team from the Armageddon universe meeting up with Ryoma and his team from the Shin VS Neo universe, as an example. Maybe they can also bring the original anime and manga incarnations too! That'd be crazy! But you get the gist! It can be called Getter Robo UNITE! Sounds like a good name for the anime to me, considering what it's going to be about! Now, if only there will be a new Getter Robo anime produced. There must be at some point, right? It can't be the end of Getter Robo already! Even though Ken Ishikawa is dead!

It was always supposed to be a Mazinger anime. What Imagawa did was remove the idea of a participation of Getter in his attempt to focus it (but then he went and added a bunch of characters from mangas that had never crossed over with Mazinger before anyway).

It can't be the end of Getter Robo already! Even though Ken Ishikawa is dead!

There's a new Getter manga going on right now by Go Nagai. Anyway, Dynamic isn't a big studio, they can't make 2 animes at once.

Well, if there's a season 2, maybe they'll finally cross over with Getter.

I do think a modern Nagai crossover is kind of overdue, especially with all the franchise reboots. They can't possibly think there's not a market for that.

But I rather have my Getter Robo UNITE idea to happen than a Go Nagai crossover. I'm sure that hasn't been done before. And I'm not ready for the Getter Robo manga yet, so that's out of the question. I'm just looking forward to a new anime.

Not a chance. These days anime crossovers are impossible. Different concepts and universes. You can't possibly have a Shin Mazinger teamed up with Shin Getter Robot. The approach is too distant.
The only way to do taht would be to go the Toei route aka two or three series with the same narrative pattern.
And it seems clear that Dynamic is not going to walk that path again. (as far as animation is concerned. Mangas, well' that's quite a different story)

As for a season 2, my opinion (no proof there) is that they will get to it once the sales for the Mazinger Z toys will be satisfactory. When tehy finish Mazinger Z they are going to carry on with Great Mazinger. Maximum profits with minimum effort. The gx-45 toy is not much more than skeleton and shell. Gx-51 Getter Dragon and Gx-52 Getter 1 are exactly the same. Great Mazinger is going to be the same.
