Finally finished Watching Ultraman Nexus....

It just seemed to me like Max was sort of a Cosmos-ish sort of run to restore peace amongst the children in preparation for the 40th anniversary show. Just a guess.

:nono: Comparing Max to Cosmos. Max was inline with traditional Ultra series, ie it's episodic but not Cosmos-ish. Max isn't some "save the kaiju" pansy, Max kills kaiju, where Musashi/Cosmos were like a Ultra-hippie out to save the kaiju at all costs.

As far as ratings, Nexus averaged 2.95% share, while Max in the same time slot earned an average of 4.01%. For comparison, Cosmos earned 5.63% in a Saturday evening time slot. And as far the time slot, I have read that TPC had no control over that, Nexus was done with the Osaka affiliate and the only time slot they could get a show on nationally was the 7:30am Saturday slot.

:sly: 2 EX epsiodes? Where is this second one from? I haven't looked at the Nexus dvds in awhile but I only recall DC 29 and 1 EX episode on them. Nexus is on 10 dvds.

Yeah. I've only heard of two extra eps or whatnot. I'll have to check again on my DVDs. I haven't seen more than 4 eps of Cosmos, but he does seem gentler than other Ultras, for example Dyna. I think out of the Heisei Ultras - Tiga, Dyna, Gaia - Dyna is the most destructive, well - Agul is pretty destructive I guess.

Nexus was very nontraditional, but I really liked it. They played the moody angst angle well - not just as a trait, but pulled it into the plot. The way the first and second half change in tone, for a bit, is nice. I don't think Nexus really ended with a different tone than it started with though.

Shougo, did you like Tiga? If you've seen it that is. The supporting cast, I thought was pretty well developed. I've been watching Gaia and Dyna and so far, only a couple of characters for each really hold my attention.

How is Max? When I saw it, I was overwhelmed by the kiddishness and prodigious amount of sparkles and whatnot and gave up on it. Does it have a compelling story?

I only rented the first few discs...eh, it was all right. I didn't like the main guy, not only for being the "bringer of destruction" for starting the trend of casting boy-band types, but for just being a boring nothing. I'm just not much of an Ultra fan, a lot of it has to do with how they never seem to me like they knock themselves out to give the main host a personality.

It wasn't as sugar coated as Cosmos, but the episodes I've seen seem lighter than something like Tiga or Gaia, making it closer to Cosmos...

I haven't had much of a chance to watch Nexus, only made it up to episode 8 before my laptop crashed, but if I can't get the software to run my external hard drive on my new computer (my laptop was an iBook, and currently I'm running a PC), I'll probably redownload it to watch. But from what I saw, I loved it. I tried to watch the first episode of Max, but for some reason it really didn't do much for me, unlike Nexus. It's drama seemed real enough not to be cheesy angst, and I liked the characters. Plus, it has some great music :buttrock:

And if that episode listing was true, that means Zagi would have shown up in episode 37, he would have been the reason Ren lost his powers and Nagi would have been Noa.

Max itself was an okay series, it's just hard to take it serious when the story calls for the actors to act serious. That's not because the cast was bad, I loved them, but the plot was way too over the top at times.

I liked Max, I found it more inline with the Showa series then any Heisei series. As a note, Showa series were more episode driven then driven by a series long plot. For example, with only a couple exceptions you could watch the original Ultraman in any order and not be lost or confused.

Yeah, Agul could be very destructive when it came to saving the Earth. Dyna is destructive? I haven't watched Dyna's series yet but I hadn't gotten that impression from his film appearances.

What about old hosts, like Hyata or Moroboshi Dan? They had personalities as did their team mates.

The Showa series could be light, and since I found other qualities Max shared with those series I would group it with the Showa series.

Edit: Checked the Nexus dvds, dvd 8 contains 29, 30, 31 and 29 DC and dvd 9 has EX, 32 and 33. Both 29 DC and EX run about 45 minutes each.

His movie appearances are not quite exemplary of his norm. Then again, in almost all of those, the featured ultra gets his blue, red, and silver butts kicked usually. Dyna is amusing though, he ranges from downright goofy to rather serious. Ep 31- Dyna vs. Dyna was quite a fun one to watch.

Yup. They don't fit in normally, but they were nice touches to include in understanding the series as a whole.

I would suggest checking out Ultraseven, it is a bit different from the original Ultraman and I'm partial to Ace. Ace loves slicing and dicing Choujuu, I think Ace used more ways to cut kaiju into pieces then all the other Ultras put together :laugh: Ace also fights the Yapool, a group from another dimension who use Choujuu, Ace is also noteable for having 2 hosts, a man and a woman, who together turned into Ace.
