Reports are surfacing that Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which has been in development since 2006, has been cancelled.

Kotaku is claiming that the planned PS3 exclusive has been canned quietly by Square Enix after it hasn't been seen in some time.

The company has allegedly made the decision to let the game fade away rather than officially announce its cancellation due to concerns over stock prices. There has been much speculation over the past year that the writing was on the wall after the title was conspicuously absent from conventions.

In fact, the last time the game was mentioned was back in May when designer Tetsuya Nomura told Game Informer that "We would like to ask for your patience on an official announcement for this title. It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can. Your patience is greatly appreciated."

Kotaku also reports that resources used to make the game were folded into what will become Final Fantasy XV a few months back.

We reached out to Square Enix for comment, but were told the company wouldn't comment on speculation or rumours. Whether true or not, an official cancellation would be better than simply letting the game become "vaporware", where its existence is never referenced again.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was originally announced in 2006 as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series of games. The other games two games in the series announced at the same time, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0 have both been released, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 has also been announced and launched since.

Awww, I really was interested in the game too :shakefist

I really hope not. I've been enjoying FFXIII and this one looked interesting from what little we've seen. :/

I find it hard to believe it because there is no "fading quietly" for FFvs13, and Square Enix has to know that.

First it's Kotaku. They rank up there with such "QUALITY" sites as Jefusion and Sankaku. Second, "a source". There is no factual anything here.

If that report is really true than I have lost all hope for Square Enix in terms of next generation games. They hardly come out with any spectacular games anymore and they take forever to make them. To get many fans excited for Versus XIII and then cancel it makes them look like a tease. I mostly care about Square Enix's handheld games mostly now. At least I enjoyed playing Dissidia Duodecim and FF IV Complete Collection. Now give me a damn FF VI remake!!!!

Well if they do cancel it, I would still want them to do somthing with the characters and engine. The game play looked very neat; like a slightly older, more world weary Kingdom hearts. Who knows, Nomura may even use the engine for a new Kingdom hearts title and bring in some of the characters from versus as key characters. Their is also always the chance that they just decided to drop the connection to XIII and make Versus its own, stand alone title. Just cause the name might change doesn't mean the game will never be. Lots of ways this can still happen, even if it doesn't.

Can some one please tell me what is enjoyable about FF13. I got to the big face boss(no spoilers), and it was a chore. None of the characters are all that likable. The music is nothing memorable. The story is just awful. I think the only good thing about FF13 is SOME of the battle system.

Brah, people that like it just have differing opinions on some of the things you listed.

No really? Wow.. Differing opinions. I mean my god that is just fucking out there right?

But seriously. I haven't seen a more linear and one dimensional FF since 10.
