E3 2009: The best one in some years?

All in all e3 was pretty much what I expected. No real surprises outside of Golden Sun DS, which is great. Microsoft didn't really announce anything unexpected, so much as confirm a lot of speculation and show off some interesting.. and questionable... new features.

Sony showed off exactly what I wanted to see with the Uncharted 2 campaign gameplay. The game looks fucking awesome, as expected, and of course launching the beta the same day (which I spent a good chunk of today with) Not to mention showing off some sweet gameplay for ACII and announcing connectivity between the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed II and their psp title AC: Bloodlines, which pretty much solidifies which version I'll get.

The M.A.G. footage looked alright, I'm not a huge multiplayer FPS fan and will probably pass on it, but considering the 256 online players, the game looked a lot better than I'd have expected for a game of it's scale.

As for Kojima's announcements. He's a crazy guy, and I had no idea what to expect in the end. A year ago when I beat MGS4 I wanted 2 things. Metal Gear Raiden (preferably bridging the time between 2 and 4) and a follow up to the Portable Ops games to finally tie 4 and 1 together. I'm pleased to say that I got them both.

The new Heavy Rain footage, interviews, and trailers were epic, at least for me, being a big fan of Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy). An interview I saw for the PS Blog showed the game in the background, with about 5 different ways that a single scene could play out, depending on the player's actions and response time. That was my favorite aspect about Fahrenheit, and I can't wait to see what Quantic Dream does with the final version of Heavy Rain, especially considering how amazing the fake version they showed in the past looked.

While I won't claim there's any one particular winner, I will say that Nintendo wins the award for most improved from 2008... what were they thinking...

Sony didn't really show much of their motion control. I mean how can anyway say it's better than the Wii's based on a few minutes on stage.

It seemed on par with the Motion Plus. I thought it was interesting that they are going to use two at once. In that regard I find it to be better. It allows you to be able to actually pick up objects as if you had both hands in the game. Granted, the Motion Plus hasn't show us what it can do yet, but Sony seems to have better ideas for their motion control rather than just wagging the remote to make Link swing his sword in a preset way. Hopefully both of them start making good use of the technology.

I think Sony is definitely on the right track with with their current motion sensor.

I remember back on the PS2 they used the eye toy for one of their Onmyou Taisenki games, which required the user to use the provided card (or the drives if you opt to buy the toys separately) to perform the proper seals for each attack.... it was fun the first time round... then it just got tiresome. Their current plan looks to have a lot more variety than just moving something in front of the camera, particularly in the tech demo they showed.

This made me laugh, because I'm tired of fanboys being all, " OMFG Nintendo sucks, Nintendo is dead to me!" and then the next second, looking like Gabe and Tycho here:

I must say at first I thought that Microsofts Natal needed to get off Nintendo's dick trying to copy the whole motion sensor thing, but then I saw Sony's little 'stick' and they just knocked Microsoft right off and started sucking. Dont paint the Wiimote black and then call it your's.

Just to clarify, outside of a similar design (how many ways can you really design a ball on a stick really) and the fact that it's a motion senestive controller, Sony's new controller isn't really a rip off at all off the wiimote, nor is Microsofts.

If anything Sony is ripping off a mocap suit more than anything. Sony's controller looks to be based more on a mocap suit, in which a special camera is tracking the movements of the balls and rendering those into on screen actions. I say looks to be because I've yet to open one to find out... for obvious reasons.

The Wiimote is based on a completely different principle, using an accelerometer and optical sensors built into the wiimote feeding off light sent to it from the the sensor bar.

Just to clarify that technically speaking, neither are ripping off Nintendo. If anything all three companies have ripped off motion capturing arcade games from 5+ years prior to the wii's release.

I agree. Everyone is going the motion sensor route in some way, but it's true the technology is different for each. I remember hearing about the Wii for the first time thinking it was going to be awesome, and then all we got was the typical games you find on the Wii now. I can see why people are all up in arms against any new motion sensor controllers, but I guess it doesn't mean it will turn out the same. Perhaps one of the two new ones will do it right. Based on how Microsoft seems to be leaning with their whole presentation on the movies, Facebook, etc, I'm assuming more casual games than anything else, but I think now I'm hoping the PS3 controller will do what I had hoped the Wii Remote to do long ago.
