dubbed toku in the 80s

VCD stands for Video CD.

Before DVDs, they were popular in Asian countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong and India (to name a few), but they never really took off in the Western world.

Well I was thinking that they were something similar to what Xiphias produced in the early 90's with their shitty quality Quicktime videos randomly shoehorned into a makeshift piece of computer software

And yes, I'm aware of laserdiscs. I was frankly surprised that they kept producing them well into the year 2000. They were EXTREMELY popular over in Japan, not so much here in America

Here's a nice little video about them by a Canadian bloke by the name of Zaranyzerak

There was no VCD in the western world? So you guys just skipped from VHS to DVD?

I guess we do learn something new everyday.

You know those Asian movies from the 90s that are split into two files? Those are because one two-hour movie could not fit into a VCD in standard encoding and thus had to be split in two.

The closest thing we probably had was this kiddified version of DVDs called Video Now and Gameboy Advance Video carts

A lot of these subbed sets are either HK or just plain ripped from fansubs. One of my proudest moments ever was walking into a DVD shop to find my fansub of Lion Maru G on the shelf. I even bought it.

Crap. I mean dubs. Legit licensed English dubbed VCDs of Sazer X and Justirizers. Was half asleep while typing that. Better fix it then. Speaking of dubs, I still find it weird that we have DVD releases of Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight but we don't have DVD releases of the Kamen Rider Kabuto English dub.

The English Kabuto dub is available in a 4 disc set on Malaysian DVD. Its readily available on Ebay, I just picked a copy up. Quality is decent despite it having about 10+ episodes crammed on to each disc.

Can you take a screencap of the English Kamen Rider Kabuto dub? Maybe it is just the Cartoon Network rip that Sandies posted years ago.

Yup!! That was at least what we did in the UK.

It's not a bootleg is it?

Its not from Cartoon Network, they appear to be taken from a master resource. I also believe it is fully licensed as it has the Malaysian Government stamp on it, which a bootleg would not receive.
