No I guess I wasn't. Now I'm gonna definatley have to check out his other flicks to get a better understanding/appreciation for it.
Yeah, I think it comes down to what you expect. Drag Me to Hell was all intentional and what you see is what a lot of people have wanted. If you were going in expecting an actual horror or slasher, I could see the movie being a pretty horrible experience.
Evil Dead 2 was just mind blowing for a lot of people. Back in the day, if you had any horror trappings two things were certain.... there is no successful fighting back and only the female lead makes it out alive. Evil Dead 2 was on of the first where it just kept breaking rules over and over and over again 'til by the end you had a dude strapping a chainsaw to his severed wrist, revving it up and saying, "Groovy." :169:
The monsters came and he answered with his shotgun and followed up with his chainsaw fist.
But in the end..... his "horror" heroes usually don't end up with the ending they expect... like in Drag Me to Hell which had me suckered all the way 'til the final frame in what I was expecting to happen.
