Double: Shoutaro's lack of back story

Well according to the 1st and 2nd ep.
He went to elementary school there and he doesnt want anyone in the City of Fuuto to cry. Good enough for me XD

Generally in a two-protagonist story you have the "special" character and the "normal" character. The "special" one has a complicated backstory and the "normal" one tends to ultimately be an average guy in extraordinary circumstances.

Philip is the "special" one of the W duo, so he has the complicated crazy angsty backstory. Shotaro is the "normal" one we're supposed to identify with most easily, so at the end of the day he's a guy who wants to emulate his hero until he becomes just as heroic.

We may find out a little more about Shotaro before the end of the show, but in terms of backstory we probably already know everything about him that's important. I doubt he's meant as a guy who has any sort of unusual family situation or deep childhood angst.

To me, a guy who risk using a potentially deadly move like the Twin-Maximum after seeing his friend cry definitely speaks volumes of how big his heart is. No matter what others may dislike about Shotaro (Which confounds to no end), his is the very heart of the show, representing the compassion that seems to lack from the other characters.

Philip lives and breathes on finding out what he doesn't know, and Terui does many things merely out of duty and (until quite recently) revenge. Shotaro, on the other hand, makes up for both of them by being the guy who helps people not for his sake, but for the people he helps.

Jimmy wouldn't have had the courage to go back to the stage if Shotaro didn't give him the moral support (no matter how bad Jimmy was), Terui would not have been as merciful as he was, Kirihiko would not have seen the truth if Shotaro did not share the same love he had for his city, and Phillip would have killed Akiko in FangJoker form if it were not for Shotaro's determination.

The list could go on, but the point is Shotaro doesn't need a reason to be kind, to be determined, to do selfless acts that would have end up hurting him, he just does because that is who he is. A big halfboiled hero, the detective that loves his city and the hate s to see its tears.

As is usual, Shotaro's the everyman who makes up with his heart. Sure, his backstory may be lacking, but it's his half-boiledness that makes him the moral center of the show.

And as I noted in another thread, he's precisely the apprentice for Soukichi Narumi. While Soukichi was better at hiding his soft side, both were men who ultimately cared for the city of Futo, putting their lives on the line.

I will point out that giving a character a complicated backstory doesn't make that character any better. It will frequently just make a character worse. If we never found out another thing about Shotaro, he'd be adequately characterized in every way that mattered to the story.

In fact, Shotaro's backstory makes Double much easier to digest - while the plots about the Museum and vengeance and Riders and Dopants are knit, it helps to have a simple key character.

Funny, I haven't even see a guy complain that Godai Yuusuke doesn't have much of a backstory to how he became who he is. Is there a reason to even have a backstory just to explain why is a person who is he when there's no dramatic things like your parents dying in a fire or revenge for a family that were killed by a Jaguar monster?
