Does RPM Retcon SPD out of existence?

RPM is shaping up to be a great season and it makes up for the medicore way SPD was handled.

However, does RPM also retcon SPD out of existence in the PR timeline?

- The primitive modern vehicles and technology in RPM hints that the series takes place in the 'not too distant' future (close to the present; similar to Terminator Salvation in 2018)

- The complete lack of aliens anywhere (SPD had them everywhere; and alot were homeless and in poverty) means that RPM does not take place before SPD (Z's backstory in the 2010s showed her in a classroom with alien students intergrated in, SPD was supposedly around from 2001 onwards [Sky's dad]).

The alien issue also raises the question of how RPM could take place after SPD. Where did all the aliens go? Alot were homeless and couldnt transport away. Why would SPD (a powerful alliance of several worlds abandon the protection of Earth)?

- SPD hinted the decades after the events of SPD would be peaceful (Messenger) when Boom received the radio transmission

- The flashback scenes of the Vengix virus attack (in The Road to Corinth) showed modern PCs being infected and thrown away 3 years prior to RPM. The computers of SPD were leagues more advanced than that.

- Dr K supposedly only discovered the Morphing Grid years prior to RPM (Rain); however SPD (supposedly an open govt organization) was openly using the morphing grid for years prior to 2025 (SPD)

Personally I love RPM and don't mind if it retcons SPD out of the PR timeline; I prefer RPM's take on the near future.

It's only been 6 episodes in and we've already seen alot of evidence that decanonizes SPD; we're bound to see more in the upcoming flashback episodes. I'm willing to bet that the flashbacks of Earth prior to the Vengix attack (in the upcoming episodes) won't match SPD's vision of the future.

SPD doesn't fit in before RPM and doesn't fit in after RPM; so is SPD now an alternate future/alternate timeline?

I figure ever since the end of the Saban era, continuity wasnt really that big of a deal

And this is important how?

No but seriously to answer your question, don't let fanboyism make your argument biased. The same statement could be applied to RPM "so is RPM now an alternate future/alternate timeline?" Its can be either SPD or RPM thats an alternate continuity. But hell continuity is hardly important in Disney era PR since all of it is just disregarded except when its time for team ups.

Maybe RPM is in a different world than SPD?
Kinda like Kamen Rider
Or those ''primitive'' cars are the last method of transportation not destroyed by Venjix?

Actually SPD fits in pretty well:

-SPD still had plenty of bikes and regular cars; heck, Syd and Z drove around in a jeep. Even in Time Force, there were still modern cars roaming around. Besides, just because aliens arrive on Earth doesn't immeadiately mean flying cars are going to be common or be the only transportation used within 50 years.

-To describe the alien thing, I think it would be best to compare RPM's earth with the situation during "The year that never was" in Doctor Who, if you've seen that:

Venjix takes over multiple computer systems like wildfire over a number of years. This a threat to SPD and possibly other high-end technology owned by other sources. Most likely SPD, including the SPD Base, work with other extraterrestial governments and organizations to make a mass exodus from Earth, aliens included (perhaps amnesty groups are involved?). Not everyone leaves, either due to Venjix interference, or simply to make Corinth (or any number of cities) homebases to hold ground until help arrives. Only a small number (probably a few hundred thousand to a couple million) remain planetside.

The help never arrives.
A collection of alien governments (or whatever intergalatic alliance exists) conclude that Venjix is too much of a threat to them, to send help or send transports as they run risk of catching the virus and bringing it offworld. SPD and related branches (including Rangers) likely disagree but it's out of their hands now. Earth is quarantined and strict warnings are set for no one to approach the planet. Thus the humans on Earth are on their own. RPM begins here.

-Messenger is a bit of a hazy source. We aren't really sure when RPM takes place it could be 2050 or 2150. Not to mention that the transmissions were from an altered future. They change history in the episode by having the Rangers survive so the world Omega and Nova return to is quite different, that doesn't mean it will be peaceful though.

-Modern PCs are easy to explain:
A. Real life reasons: Old computers are easier to trash for footage then high-tech looking props.
B. Again we never really saw life outside the SPD base, tech could be inconsistently distributed.
C. Older computers were affected first?
D. Retro stylings or a recursion of tech to wane off chances of virus.

-Just because SPD became international law on Earth doesn't mean that Ranger Tech was open for perusal. Otherwise Lightspeed, Overdrive and Time Force technology would have spread and every city would have Rangers. Remember it was a severe danger that Ranger Upgrades (i.e. SWAT mode) were stolen by thieves who could have put it on the black market. Like all the paramillitary organizations, they likely just kept it to themselves. Besides whatever team or organization Dr. K was working with just stumbled into it without help, and it's doubtful that the fundamentals of the Morphin' Grid are common knowledge, and without any Ranger influence they just had to make with what they could identify out of their findings.

After all, we've had, what, 5 different human discoveries by different groups and uses of the Morphin' Grid by now (Lightspeed, Time Force, Ninja Academies (Ninja Storm), SPD, Hartford Industries (Operation Overdrive), Pai Zhua through RJ (Jungle Fury)) not including whatever group of people Tommy worked with. Everyone kind of just taps into the thing either with help or by accident, and if they all went public I doubt that Venjix would have lasted this long.

-Oh and before anyone mentions it,

The JKF seen in "Ranger Green" is likely a different restaraunt then the one in Ocean Bluff. RJ probably opened a chain of them after Dai Shi was defeated. This not only proves that RPM is at least a few couple decades after Jungle Fury but gives a nice nod to past history without much focus or wasted dialouge. Like the nods to the Curry Shop in the Sentai Vs. series.

In review, Eddie said that he was not aiming for any continuity ties and would just be starting from scratch with his writing. Thus, as of now, nothing really tips either way (as subtle references seen thus far show) and when Judd Lynn arrives, references could start coming out of every corner or be not mentioned at all.

We've barely begun and much backstory still needs to be layed down yet, especially concerning Venjix's origins.

Don't try too hard to make sense of continuity right now when we are only 6 episodes into a new series and only have a few points not even necessarily confirmed by actual story focus.

Let's at least wait until after episode 18 before we start getting into flame wars about continuity. Changes in writing and show direction can go a long way.

We're only 6 episodes in; I say wait until the series ends before trying to understand the continuity.

For all we know they could show or say more about the current time & other related events in RPM.

It's clearly set in between the timeline gap between SPD and Time Force.

Millunieum City in Time Force appears to have been a dome, and we know that outside the city is a baren wasteland, thanks to Ransik's flashback of how he found and created the MutOrgs in Reinforcements From The Future.

I know a lot of people actually WANTED SPD retconned out of existence when it was airing, but it would suck if it did. The cool thing about the PR universe is EVERYTHING matters, even the stuff we don't necessarily like.

So, no, I don't think so, to answer your question.

It doesnt fit well at all though; its nowhere close to a smooth transition.

Why would SPD evacuate all the aliens from Earth (including all the poverty-striken ones on the streets) and leave innocent humans on Earth to perish?

Humans were equal partners with the aliens in SPD and they were all intergrated into a mixed society.

It just doesnt add up well.

I'm still willing to bet that the pre-Vengix attack flashback scenes will show an Earth that's completely different than the Uber-futuristic Alien-populated Earth of SPD.

Mainly because Eddie didn't use SPD as a prequel template to set up RPM; which is fine in my books.
