Do you pay much attention to typesetting?

Hello.A common controversial theme in the fansubbing world is the question of typesetting.
Teams sometimes dont agree about what is a good typesetting, blaming a typesetting for being too flashy for example.

As far as iam concerned , as long as i can read the subsin a show, i am not shocked if a typesetting uses flashy colors,or white, black, blue, etc, as long as it doesnt burn my eyes.

According to you , why is typesetting a common place for arguments between fansubbers, even more than translation in itself, which should be more important?

What about you?Do you grant importance to typsetting when you watch a subbed show?

I'm usually not very involved in the subbing community but as a viewer I will say this: It's not about you (the subbers), it's about the show.

The idea should be to convey what is being said in the clearest possible way so that the dialog and story can be easily understood to an English speaking viewer and enabling them to appreciate the show on all the levels the creators intended. You don't need to put rims on the alphabet to get me to care because I'm not there for spinning letters or creepy cursive. I'm there for the show.

Allow me understand the show, please.

What I love about TV-Nihon is how they try and justify their translations as being tools to help their viewers learn Japanese

This is a complete joke because one of their subbers posted point blank saying he enjoys leaving in random snippets untranslated because it looks "cool"

This honestly shows a complete disregard for their viewers and is more or less just pandering to their own egos

I cannot stand them and I make light of the fact that facebook pages like Henshin Fever continually post TV-N episodes, hoping that someday they'll actually see the truth of those subs

I can honestly say that I've learned more Japanese through Overtime's & GUIS's subs than I have with TV-N's force feedings

Ok can you just stand back for like two seconds and really look at what you're saying. you're complaining about subtitles, SUBTITLES! doesn't that sound kinda petty to you?
So TV Nihon doesn't fully sub their stuff... ok. if you don't like it, move on. I don't get why guys like you and Kingranger even care. Just go watch someone else's subs and don't worry about it. Problem solved. Theres no way its worth the effort. Who gives a damn what subs anyone is watching. There HAS to be something better to talk about.

And he has every right to say what he wants about those subtitles. Who are you to say he's petty. He's not insulting you, so why don't you just take a step back.

This is a discussion about subtitles, karaoke, and other things like that. It all involves typesetting. And in case you are unable to read the title of the thread, it is about typesetting and what people think about it.

If you don't like that topic, don't post in the thread about it. If you think this thread and topic isn't worth talking about, go post in a thread more to your liking.

I will say he went on about their translation "style", and maybe a new thread needs to be made about what people think about force feeding Japanese words in what should be a translation.

Slightly off-topic segue:

I was watching an English film with Chinese subtitles the other day, and I really found the huge simplified Chinese fonts distracting and pretty much annoying. That's partly because I don't understand them, and partly because they cover parts of the screen.

It's the same thing with pretty flashy fonts that don't really do a good job translating otherwise. You're experience of the show is distracted by the pretty text which isn't in English.

From TV Tropes and their article on "fan dumb":

The Perfectionist: Like the Purist, the Perfectionist believes there is only one way to do things. However, whereas the Purist is hung up on a particular period, the Perfectionist is consumed with a particular way of enjoying the product; there is only one correct way to play this game, or listen to this music, or watch this film, and that's his way.

Every time the subject of fansub preferences comes up it's only a matter of time until someone lands slap bang into this definition :anime:
