Well the first episode is out and the latest Ultra sure is a shouty boy ?

As always, thoughts on the premier (or beyond if you're seeing this later on) ?

That might have been for the worst opener for an Ultra series I've ever seen. What the **** was ANY of that? "RAR IM ANGRY ULTRA!" and how the hell is anything descended from both crustacean AND a reptile? And what morons thought it'd be a great idea to monitor a monster within visible distance of the city its destroying? An what is with those bizarre ass camera angles? Holy **** I hope this does not reflect the rest of the series. It's like one of those pathetic parodies out of Heybot or Shinkalion.

We finally watched the premier and that was freaking fantastic. May be the best opening to an Ultra series in quite some time. I loved that the whole thing took place at night as it allowed for the effects work to truly shine. Another thing I liked is how our Ultra host is not some rookie, but an actual seasoned commander. It was well shot with a lot of excellent camera angles that felt like they were mimicking Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman. PLus, it set the mood that this show is going to be a lot more serious, which is a welcomed change. It reminded me of Nexus. The monster's face made me think of the Gyaos from the Gamera Heisei trilogy, which was really cool. My only complaint is Blazar's constant need to shout, "Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy" throughout the entire fight. Other than that, this is a remarkable premier and I look forward to the next episode.

One of the things I'm really liking about the series so far is the franchise's return to its more mystery investigation roots with SKaRD and their tactics.

There's something uniquely stupid about an Ultra Q monster with no powers casually being more powerful than an Ultra that screams bad fan wankery. Blazar has a real chance of ending up being the worst non-Netflix Ultra series depending on how much stupid they want to cram in. I mean damn, I was actually excited to have all new monsters for once. Then Canaan Seijin came back. Now whatever the hell last episode was. Nice tribute and all, but at what cost?

This week's episode was fucking amazing. The best Ultraman episode since Z ended. It was weird, well shot, and that redux of the Ultra Q theme with classical instruments was utter bliss. I hope they release that theme on a soundtrack because it is a must own.

Aaaaaand it's over! I don't get it, there was a lot of effort in this, the writing wasn't bad, the action was solid, no dumb jokes, the tone was consistent, the new ideas were executed well; yet despite all this compared to previous entries it's... Out of steam? I don't know how to describe it. Aside from Earth Garon being pretty useless until the final episode there's nothing to really rag on it.

Time to rank it:
Taiga > Dyna > Gaia > Nexus > Geed > Jack > Z > Mebius > Joneus > Ginga S > Tiga > Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle: Never Ending Odyssey > Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle > R/B > Powered > 80 > Ultraman > Max > Decker > Leo > Great > Neos > Taro > Origin Saga > Ace > Trigger > Ultra Seven > Orb > Cosmos > Neo Ultra Q > X > USA > Blazar > Ginga > Ultra Seven X > Ultra Q > Dark Fantasy > Ultra Fight Victory > Ultra Zero Fight > Nice

What a fantastic series Blazar was. Easily the best show since Orb. It took a more mature approach while keeping things balanced to never feel too silly or serious when necessary. I like that it didn't throw the merchandise in your face, rather, let it just be apart of the show naturally. Not to mention it didn't have any previous Ultras showing up for the sake of showing up. The best episode was without a doubt the Garumon one because that sequence with the violins was one of the greatest moments in Ultraman history. My least favorite episode is probably the one with the monster that appeared as people's worse fear, but even that wasn't horrible. The worst part really was the amount of clip shows. The music to Blazar was fantastic, especially that one really creepy static sounding theme. Battles were extremely well shot, especially the final one. If I have any complaints about the finales itself, it's the old douchebag guy got away with everything scott free and we never found out why Blazar chose Gento. Well, I guess that is what the movie is for. Overall, it was a solid show and I hope the next one takes the Blazar approach.
