Decade Questions/Thoughts

Also, the guy with one arm is introduced and leaves in about 2 minutes, acting like we should know him, but he had never been mentioned at all before.

That bit requiered a bit Rider knowledge, the name of the character is Yuuki Jouji (played by Gackt), he is the alter ego of Riderman, the fourth Kamen Rider as he appeared in KR V3. I will not go into too many spoilers, but Yuuki Jouiji is a legendary character, in his original story he worked for as the leader of the Science division of Destron until he was framed by Marshall Armor who branded him a traitor and marked him for execution by dissolving him in acid, but his comrades betrayed Destron and helped him escape, though not before his arm was dissolved. After that they operated on him, replaced his arm and he becoma Riderman to exact his revenge on Marshall Armor.

In this movie they basically took his original story and merged it with Decade´s backstory, which is actually really cool because it might imply that this alternate version of Yuuki Jouji was the creator of the DecaDriver and the DienDriver.

1. Is this in continuity?

This is actually a complicated matter, All Riders vs. Dai Shocker was meant to be the original ending of the series, the events of the movie are foreshadowed many times during the series, but those plans were scrapped and we got Movie War 2010. According to the fine gentlemens of Toei, this movie IS canon with the series (even MW2012 references it), the problem is that given the way the show works there is no way to fit it in the continuity, so the movie is canon and non-canon at the same time, we just have to play pretend.

That was actually outright stated in magazines at the time. Tsukasa cut his arm after he had finished the DecadeDriver. The movie just shows in that brief segment right after Tsukasa recovers his memories both events happening one after the other, but doesn't connect them directly.

Anyway, aside from being a reference to an older character, Decade's Yuuki Jouji was played by a guest too (Gackt) which is why he receives so much spotlight during his one scene.

The plan was scrapped during the development of the movie itself though, not afterwards. The final movie that we got mentions that the fusion of worlds is going on, and never resolves that plot point at all. It does lead to an odd narrative though. Of course, Movie Wars 2010 itself also was a rather odd fit with the ending of the show before the second version of the last episode.

Eh, it's problematic, but not that bad. One episode doesn't need to come immediately after the next one just due to the wallpaper cliff hanger. Episode 30 itself has a reaction shot of Eijiro to the Rider War World paper that doesn't fit in with the final scene in 29. Then, there's also the Chou Den-O movie. The second Den-O episode ended with the Kabuto wallpaper dropping and Sieg popping up. That's clearly supposed to lead to Chou Den-O's movie, not the Kabuto episodes, in spite of the wallpaper.

I'd recommend you to go in this particular order: Ryuki, Faiz, Blade, Kabuto, Kuuga, Agito, Hibiki, Den-O, Kiva, Double for Heisei Riders.

If you're into Showa, in order, I'd say the original Kamen Riders, V3, X, Stronger, Super-1, Black, ZO.

I'd watch the Kamen Rider G Special too, to get a feel of what the basics of the original Kamen Riders were like, even if its just a parody.

I'm watching Ryuki right now, after that, I'm not sure. Some Rider shows I've looked for but can't get (like Faiz) because I can't torrent, can only use about 10% of download sites (because I use public computers that block a lot of sites like that) and mostly can't watch mkv videos. If its not in avi (and a compatible type of avi for my PS3, Ryuki from TV-N on krdl didn't work, but superherotimefan has it on dailymotion) and its not on krdl or superherotimefan, I probably can't watch it. Assuming everything stays the same, I can't get Faiz, V3, or X, and I can only get 5 episodes of Super-1 and 39 episodes of the original Kamen Rider. Still, I may be up for another Rider show. I limit how many shows I watch, right now I'm at 3 toku shows: Ryuki, Jetman and Garo (which I watch with my brother). Jetman is starting to drag (Kaori especially is really getting on my nerves) and I'm really getting into KR, so I may drop Jetman for another Rider. It may be Blade, but since it also has a card thing like Ryuki, I may got to one of the showa Riders, like Black (which I can find in several places, totally subbed).

I think it would be cool to see an older Rider, although I hated ZO. I watched it a few days ago, and it was just awful (and dubbed instead of subbed for some reason, even though it was from TV Nihon), although it would have been just mediocre if the dub didn't make me want to jump off a cliff. It wasn't the style of the story so much as the story itself, though, so I don't think its an indication of what I'd think of older Riders. I'll try out the first 3-4 episode of Black and see what I think. If I like it, it will replace Jetman. If not, I'll try out another Rider. I'd replace Jetman with another Sentai, but I'm more in a KR mood right now, the next Sentai I watch will probably be the new one when it starts.

Well, that explains the dub. The subbed version from TV-N is actually on youtube (I just found it) but they seemed to have followed the story pretty closely in the dub so I don't really feel like watching it again. Its funny, there have been so many bad dubs of things over the years, I never even considered that the dub of ZO wasn't a real attempt
