You know, everyone says VRT was "the dark" PR, but really... VRT was sometimes more childish than the real PR. Percy (ugh), Woody (UGH), Jeb (uggggggggh)... VRT was rife with slapstick on a level even season one MMPR didn't boast in nearly every episode. Almost because that was the only way they could secure a syndication package for it.
The maturity of the source footage necessitated a somber tone to the storylines, but believe me -- the show reeked a lot in that first season. I'd argue season two VRT is really where the show reaches its full potential. They'd finally perfected the editing, the writing was much tighter and more playful, and Shaider just worked so much better for the "dimensional shifting" aspect than Metalder.
My main issue with VRT season one is my same issue with Masked Rider and Ninja Storm. EVERYBODY is the comic relief. Say what you will about Beetleborgs, by the time of Metallix they really understood the kids were only interesting as the straight men to the House Monsters. MMPR understood exactly how wacky our leads needed to be for us to still care about them as characters. Few successive American Tokusatsu programs ever understood that balance.
I happen to think Cybertron had more potential than VRT, just because it wasn't slaved to the inherent weaknesses Troopers had at the onset by concurrently hacking two unrelated programs and thus undermining the "team" element in a team series. Plus, while Ryan was often unemotive and a little distant, Adam seems like a straight up ass. I approve.
