Carmen Sandiego Is Returning To Video Games

Carmen Sandiego was kind of a multimedia phenomenon in the 90s — it started with the computer games, sure, but there were books, comics and especially TV shows. A Fox Kids cartoon and a PBS game show both aired at the same time, and both are beloved by folks of that era. In 2019 Carmen returned to television, but not quite as anyone knew her. The Netflix series had the two kids from “Where On Earth,” but the main character, for the first time, was Carmen herself. This couldn’t happen in previous incarnations because Carmen was the villain you were […]

I miss the days when Carmen Sandiego was just a pure villain. Turning her into some kind of anti-hero seems to water down what made her intriguing in the first place. This new game might be a decent way to introduce kids to geography, but for someone like me who remembers the original series, I’m not holding my breath. I’ll keep an open mind, but I wish they’d left well enough alone instead of reinventing everything.”

Wait, hold up—when I first saw the headline, I got super excited thinking they were bringing back the classic Carmen Sandiego, you know, the one where she was the ultimate villain you could never catch! I grew up loving how she was always one step ahead, stealing these impossible things like famous landmarks. But then I kept reading and realized it’s based on the Netflix reboot, where she’s not even really a bad guy anymore? Honestly, I’m a little bummed.

I get why they’re making her more of a "good thief" now—maybe it appeals to younger audiences—but to me, part of what made Carmen so cool was that she was this mysterious, untouchable mastermind. Changing her into a hero working with ACME just feels... I don’t know, off?

I might check out the game for the nostalgia factor, especially with the ‘ACME Files’ mode they mentioned, but I was really hoping for something more true to the original. The Netflix Carmen just doesn’t have the same vibe for me. Hopefully, the gameplay makes up for it!

I’m excited and a bit nervous about this. I grew up playing the original Carmen Sandiego games on those clunky school computers, so the nostalgia factor is real. But I’m also a bit wary of how much they’re changing things. The Netflix version didn’t totally work for me, but I appreciate that they’re trying to honor the old while bringing in new elements. Guess I’ll just have to play it and see. The classic mode sounds promising at least!

Yes! I loved the Netflix Carmen Sandiego series and was hoping for a video game version at some point. I think it’s really cool that they’re sticking with the newer version of Carmen. I like her better as a good guy who’s still kind of mysterious and sneaky. The ACME Files thing sounds fun, but I’m more excited about getting to explore cities and stop VILE in a more action-packed way
