Burning Tokusatsu Question

I like my Toku to be dark, mysterious, violent, a little bit of comedy I guess as long as it doesn't extend to the level of Power Rangers comedy. I basically like my Toku to be like the Paradise Lost movie.

The best shows are the ones that stay in the middle -- dramatic enough to take seriously, funny enough to relieve stuffiness without detracting from the drama. I think Agito's the best example of any current show that's done that successfully.

I hate those moody shows that try to be "realistic," depressing and humor-free when they're a damned superhero show like Timeranger or Faiz and I hate the shows that try to be dramatic when they're mostly goofy as hell like the past five sentai shows.

I like my Toku to be at least a little more serious than my Sentai.
Once I've gotten to know the characters and really am there in the moment with them, sure throw in a bit of comedy.

The perfect example to me of comedy fitting in with a sci-fi or drama show is the Star Trek Next Gen movies. After watching and really getting to know these charaters for a lot of years, they added a bit of comedy into the movies. And since we've known these charaters for so long, it feels like we're let in on the 'in-jokes'.

And that's pretty much what I like. You don't have to do any screwball antics or have a couple of episodes of a wakky adventure (the whole mixed ident thing in the middle of Blade was a little too dumb for me, as far as the "comedic episodes" went). I've got situation comedies in the states for that. Just let us really get to know the characters, and then let us in on some 'in-jokes'.

Well said. For me, it depends on the actors and what kind of acting they're suited for, and other factors, such as storylines and characters. I don't exclusively watch either extreme though; I just watch whatever I like. However, I do find it a bit hard to take "dark" tokusatsu, shows packed with colorful costumes and cartoonish action meant for small children, seriously. The worst show is the one that takes itself too seriously.

I like my Toku to have plenty of both: Seriousness and Comedy. If it's a little too comedy like, or if it's too dark and serious (EG: Ultraman Nexus) then it's boring!!

The best example to play off of here is Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Seasons 1-5. PERFECT mix of comedy and drama. The funny stuff lightens the mood, but every now and then an episode or a subplot comes around and breaks you in half.

Then comes Season 6. They stopped trying to be funny and took themselves WAY too seriously. It started to suck. Hard.

Another example? The Guyver vs the Guyver: Dark Hero. Kickass action in both. Why is one better than the other? Dark Hero has no rapping frog. If you're gonna be funny, BE FREAKIN' FUNNY.

The most balanced Toku I've seen so far has been Blade.

I like shows that are played straight but with a sense of humor. They never take themselves too seriously, but at the same time they keep things serious enough that the humorous parts are actually...funny. A very subtle, absurdist dark sense of humor (like in most of the Kamen Riders) is what I really enjoy the most.

You're kidding right? Buffy seasons 5-7 was awfully dumb. They were serious to characters with horns for ears came on.
