British Television

Now granted, I'm not terribly knowledgeable concerning British television, but I do know a couple of things, either due to research, popcultural osmosis (or "internet osmosis" as it were in some cases), or seeing the various shows that were sent across the pond, at one time or another.

Obviously there's no need to list things such as Doctor Who or Red Dwarf, and I see I've been beaten to the punch concerning "The Dreamstone," so I'll start with some lesser known, or at least less obvious ones, and go from there:

Under the "current" category there's:
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE3e6gxo6d8"]QI (Quite Interesting)[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HsxGygknNE"]Sherlock[/ame]

And here's a few older ones you may or may not know:
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nqN_7eGItM"]Around the World with Willy Fog[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2swWPzsSAo"]AWWF-Ending Theme[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14eUKogPF7s"]The Prisoner[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1sAa9K1Jcw"]Bimble's Bucket[/ame]
(The latter is sort of the Spirtual Successor to "The Dreamstone")

I've also heard of a character known as "Basil Brush," basically a handpuppet fox character, who seems to be both a cult televison icon in the UK and yet apparently not very well known. (Interestingly it turns out the character has been around since the 1960s, and apparently won "The Weakest Link" once, and made it to the Final Round in a later Anniversary episode [and the actual winner split the winnings with him, for him to donate to his designated charity]) Anyone here heard of him before?

Also there's a few shows already posted about, elsewhere, including:
Art Attack, Redwall, Sherlock Holmes (Granada), The Worst Witch, Watership Down
Postman Pat, Fireman Sam (Technically Welsh), Bertha, The Dreamstone (already mentioned)
Rupert (Though there are other versions)
Zzzap!

And to finish things off, I have a list of various UK shows which maybe of interest to a few of you here, and I have clips for at least most of them. See if there's one you remember:

Missed out on Terrahawks, which was doing Team America-level humour way in advance, One episode proved so controversial it was banned from reruns.

Embarassingly I actually like 5 Star. :P Never grew up with them because I was a very young kid at the time and too young to be interested in Pop Music, but I actually like the System Addict song.

I dunno!! It's catchy!!

Speaking of cheesy pop stars, I think I've noticed some sort of weird pattern. I'm not sure if pattern is the correct word but.. anyway..

In the 70's it was all about this guy.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD45zl7L5Io[/ame]

In the 80's you didn't need to be American to get a get a girlfriend, you just needed to dress up daft.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCoBKbMeX98[/ame]

In the 90's it was about boys flashing their chests and bums.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQLFLJkRc1s[/ame]

^ Fucking sick and disgusting video. I think this might be edited from the original so you don't see his nude bum, but nude bum or no nude bum it's still fucking disgusting.

In the 2000's it was about Indie bands with scruffy beards and guitars on T4..

Now it's 2010, a new decade, a new era. Kid Singers. Justin Bieber and Miley (UGLY) Cyrus. Before those two we had someone who was equally annoying.

So, are Channel Five gonna revive Minipops too, just to keep in fashion? Not that I want that to happen..

Live and Kicking, I'll admit at the time I only tuned into this show for Rugrats and Clarissa Explains it All. I actually had a crush on this girl, but I never wanted to admit it.

Speaking of Saturday "Mournings" I think T4 wasn't just a Saturday Mourning, but a Sunday Mourning too. Gosh I really want to wake up to watch annoying and unfunny presenters who crack an unfunny joke, and nobody finds it funny, and then he goes "OH **** IT, HERE'S THE SIMPSONS!!"

Don't get me wrong, I love The Simpsons... I have to admit it's a little bit overrated with people saying it's the best cartoon ever, but it's still a good show if you try not to watch it on Channel 4 for a long time.

What really annoys me is that Channel 4 keep playing all back to back seasons of The Simpsons over and over again. It's really pointless because all episodes of The Simpsons are available on DVD Boxsets.

I kinda miss the days when Satellite Dishes were the big thing. I kept begging my parents to get Sky TV so that I could watch The Simpsons and Power Rangers on Sky One, as well as Nickelodeon and the other Kids channels, as well as MTV, etc.. eventually they did, and it was the best day of my life, but my soap opera watching mum was pissed off about it for reason I even now could never understand.

Then a few years later we got Sky Digital, and then later we cancelled the Sky subscription because the Sky Digibox was rarely being used. I'm a little bit skeptical about wanting my own Sky subscription, because the only reason I would want Sky again is because Sky One has newer episodes of The Simpsons, while Channel 4 keep playing back to back episodes. Other than that, there's the Music channels, but with music videos being available on YouTube it just seems pointless. Other than that, there's football that I'm not interested in, and films that you can buy on DVD anyway, and I haven't been watching The Simpsons for ages. Plus you can watch the newer episodes of The Simpsons on the Internet anyway.

I think in conclusion, it probably won't be worth buying a Sky Subscription until ACTA have their way and make downloading TV shows dangerously illegal.

I used to be obsessed about British and American comedy when I was younger and would hunt down and find every single show I could.

What the heck was the name of that U.S sitcom where Snow White's whole family were put into a slumber and awoke in Suburban New York? That aired a lot on TVAM on a Saturday...

I believe the show your're referring to was called "The Charmings".

Following the list, the next selection will be of Gameshows:
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxzKTbu-aR0"]Knightmare (80s Intro)[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImIIrzOBxNk"]Knightmare-1990s Intro[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yupQkO6x9hM&feature=related"]Raven[/ame]
(Raven could possibly be considered the "Spiritual Successor" of Knightmare, though there are no actual connections, it does use similar premise/motif and a decent use of CGI and live-action sequences)
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dy553E_oa0"]The Crystal Maze[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8erw2_SmLQ"]The Krypton Factor[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOCrYRRlZus"]Krypton-2009 Revival[/ame]

What about this?

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtdtX8k3uaM"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtdtX8k3uaM[/ame]

I loved this show. I have all 9 complete DVD. :buttrock:

I really need to watch this sometime!!

Oh man!! The Crypton Factor!! I used to love this show when I was a very wee little boy!!

I had no idea they revived it too. Shame the theme tune's not good as the old one but that's just the theme tune. Wonder if the overall TV show's still good.

What channel is it on?!!

I miss Fort Boyard!!

I used to like watching Countdown as a kid too. These days I'm not so much into countdown but sometimes it can be a fun show to watch.

R.I.P Richard Whitely.

The Krypton Factor is on ITV1, the same channel which aired it originally. As it's the second main channel in the UK, if you're in the UK, you should've known that.

Merlin series 3 starts tonight, 7.25pm BBC One, I'll be watching that.

Oh, and the last ever Big Brother finished yesterday.

Guess I'd better check the TV Guides for Crypton Factor.

Finally!! Britain has SOMETHING to watch on TV!!

Can't stand Big Brother!!

I don't hate Merlin but as with Dr Who I'm not a keen fan of it. Dunno why..

I'd like to watch the Crystal Maze again. It seems similar to Fort Boyard.

Speaking of Game Shows, I used to LOVE watching FunHouse.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnpB3HLPHOI[/ame]

Apparently FunHouse was based on an American kids gameshow with the same name.

Anybody remember GamesMaster, a video games review series?

Wish I could've watched more of it at the time..
