British Television

Black Ranger RX

I don't have low self esteem.
Hello!!

So there was a thread here on HJU discussing Canadian TV.. Well I thought I'd do a thread for discussion on British TV. General British TV. So what are your opinions.

Mine?

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG9yYvqirWU[/ame]

Well let's just start off with today. GMTV I've just learned has been axed, and replaced by a program called "Daybreak". The funny thing is, Daybreak is the same fucking crappy ass show that GMTV was. Just boring garbage all the way from 6.AM til 9.AM. What was the bloody point? I'll admit the only one good thing GMTV had was that they HAD Power Rangers. But that's it.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFN8x2eApc4[/ame]

Since The Big Breakfast got axed in 2002, there was pretty much no reason to wake up in the morning in Britain anymore. Even today, just more reason to stay in bed longer than to turn that telly on, if there's no Chris Evans falling off his chair, or Johnny Vaughan pouring a teapot into his nose, or Zig and Zag..

Speaking of Zig and Zag, they're actually back now but they're interviewing Big Brother stars.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIIKU7fs-Y0[/ame]

Apparently, TV:AM (GMTV's predecessor) has fanboys. YES, TV:AM HAS FANBOYS!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!! Or so that's what I think after I came across some people on YouTube commenting about how GMTV sucks and ITV should bring back TV:AM. But why? Really there doesn't seem to be anything special about TV:AM. OK, so maybe as a kid I watched TV:AM for the kid's programs but that's all I ever gave a damn about TV:AM (unsurprisingly). I think it should be Roland Rat who should have all the fanboys, not TV:AM. After all, he was the one who "saved" them.

Apart from the mornings, personally I think British TV nowadays is generally full of crap, with X Factor and other shows about some nutters prancing around some judges going "Oh look at me I'm really cool!! Please let be be in the finals!!". Big Brother's on it's last ever series and is getting axed but just because one crap show is being axed doesn't quite mean the rest are. Plus daytime TV with shows that are just GMTV in the afternoon, this annoying Yorkshire guy boring us about antiques, these stupid annoying Soap Operas that have been around since the 60's.

You may be thinking that I'm some Weeaboo/Wapanese/Whatever, and I think British Television only sucks because we don't have Kamen Rider, and Anime and Japanese shows, right? Well that's not quite true because even without Kamen Rider I do believe that British Television has had it's good times. Like our comedy shows for example..

The 1970's brought us Fawlty Towers, a classic.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-oH-TELcLE[/ame]

The 1980's brought us Spitting Image. Personally I think you don't nesseserily need to be interested in British pollitics to appreciate the weirdness of this show. I used to watch it as a kid and I loved it.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJF6PBhAhlo[/ame]

And who could forget the 1990's brought us Mr.Bean?

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4cmrMJul1g[/ame]

The early 2000's gave us Banzai, a spoof Japanese game show..

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bZ_gAVEEXo[/ame]

Now, in the more recent years while I have to admit Fonejacker was cool..

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjH9cEoEup8[/ame]

..but apart from FoneJacker a lot of British comedy seems more plain stupid than funny. Remember when Johnathon Ross (while I do respect him for liking Ultraman), and the guy with the funny beard, were phoning Andrew Sachs and leaving a message on his answer phone saying that they had sex with his granddaughter?

Well, I could go on to talk about the kids shows, but I think I've typed in so much and I think I'll leave that til later.

I've got a number of opinions about British tv. I had something all written up, but I got logged out, so I'll reply to some of the stuff you said.

And half of it I'd already typed up elsewhere, so it's no big loss.

I haven't seen "Daybreak", but I don't like that Lorraine (whatever her surname is) is still there. I never liked her show when I was little and I still don't like it now. I didn't like the shift in tone her segment of GMTV brought, about fashion and all sorts of stuff.

I also heard rumours ITV were planning on pulling GMTV's kids strands altogether. Well if promos are anything to go by, Toonattik and Action Stations and staying.

Incidentally, I have a rant about Toonattik that I'll save for some other time.

I was glad to hear Big Brother was getting axed...last year. When I heard about it happening, I thought last year's Big Brother was going to be the last. It wasn't. I was not happy. I also don't like that Channel 4 have launched "Ultimate Big Brother". Gee, can't you just kill it off already without trying to milk the last dregs out?

I think I'll keep the rest of my views for some other time.

Of course, three of the most popular UK imports in the States have been Doctor Who, Dangermouse, Count Duckula, Queer as Folk (leading to a seperate U.S series) and The Office (likewise), there's still some kids shows that should have received more love across the pond or, better yet, needed to be reran over here more, like The Dreamstone

And RX is right, TV-AM's success relies heavily on Roland Rat, Timmy Mallet, and the darling of kids presenters, Dame McKela Stracken (yes I know she isnt an OFFICIAL dame...and why the hell not?)

Lorraine's surname is Kelly. She was actually a main presenter on TV-am as well, so she's now survived the demise of two breakfast shows.

As for Toonattik, that name should've been ditched when they sacked Jamie and Anna, IMHO. Or better yet, they shouldn't have axed the presenters! >:( I see the TV listings for both ITV1 and CITV this weekend don't mention Toonattik or Fluffy Club, neither does CITV's weekday listings mention Action Stations. Are the brands gone or not?

As for Ultimate Big Brother, well, good riddance. I hear Channel Five might be interested in relaunching BB though, so it might not be the last series after all.

By the way, if you wasn't aware, for the last six weeks Action Stations has had Power Rangers RPM at 9am. It's now at 6am every weekday.

That Round the Bend clip that Skynight has posted, was just one example of the times when CITV was awesome and not ****. I know that CITV is for kids, and we're grown ups and we should be watching grown up shows even if it means watching bullshit like Big Brother, but come on!! Toonattic is.. well it's like Tiswas except Tiswas was awesome and Toonattic was shite.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOwokGfD4zQ[/ame]

Except Tiswas finished before I was born but hey at least I got to watch the night time special "Tiswas Reunited". Judging by the YouTube clips Tizwas is so cool it makes me wish I was a kid at the time. Oh well, you can't have everything.

But hey, at least I got to watch this..

I used to have a crush on Cat Deeley, long before Japanese hotties were my fetish.

*cries*

IS THERE NO HOPE FOR BRITISH TELEVISION?!!

So what next? Are Channel Five gonna relaunch Popstars, Pop Idol, Fame Academy? Are they gonna relaunch RI:SE (the crappy replacement for The Big Breakfast)? A crappy soap opera called CrossRoads was relaunched in 2001-ish. Are they gonna give it a 3rd sequel?

Are they gonna re-launch Naked Jungle? LOL!!!

http://www.gm.tv/articles/gmtv-today/august-2006/22150-naked-jungle.html

Damn!! If Kamen Rider can't come to beat the **** out of those fags from Daybreak, the nutters from Big Brother and Ass Factor, then at least have Chris Tarrent throw pies at them (instead of asking people if they want to Phone a Friend).

Speaking of Kamen Rider, guess who else never came to the UK?

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgfnzYgjW9E[/ame]

We did get Saban's Masked Rider, BUT IT WAS ****!!!

Let's just be glad they havent brought back Eldorado:sweat:

Back when Channel Five launched, it's biggest kids draw was showing Knight Rider and Captain Power and The Soldiers of The Future to boot, so it wasnt all bad there, and who could forget train-wreck soap Sunset Beach? That channel had some cheesy stuff, now it's just all entirely U.S imports

Aww man!! Captain Power!! If only I watched it at the time!! :(

I'm glad they never re-launched Eldorado, but really, all soaps suck. I know that there are people who like them but really, all they're about are just stupid families screaming and shouting at each other, smacking each other in the faces, and all sorts of stupid stuff.

Anybody remember Kids Incorporated?

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnsHpPNltBw[/ame]

Well one year before Kids Incorporated, Britain had a similar show called "MiniPops".

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_U0Kyv4PRA&feature=related[/ame]

What both of the shows have in common are, that they're both about kids singing. Which is absolutely nothing special, but what the differences between these shows are..

Minipops is disgusting, distasteful, and the kids can't sing.

Kid's incorporated is innocent, decent, and the kids aren't bad singers at all.

So yeah, Kids Incorporated PWNS Minicrap.

But moving away from the crap shows for a bit, I used to LOVE watching Rolf's Cartoon Club!!

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTHnQZ7D1Qk[/ame]

Thankfully, I never saw mini-pops, but I did get to see the rise and legendary prat fall of Five Star, whose biggest hits were "Can't Wait" and getting famously burned on Going Live

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVZ_MMM2KhY[/ame]

A few other Saturday mourning shows dealt with high-concept ideas like trying to tell a story whilst simotaniously fulfilling the needs of a Saturday mourning line-up interviewing celebrities and staging game shows. The BBC did it better than most with the first season of Paralel 9 (which has an awesome theme song)

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVHV-ivON6k[/ame]

ITV had some exceptions to this rule also, like Ghost Train

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa8Qd249FgI[/ame]

But we all know the supreme saturday mourning show of the 90s was, besides SMTV: Live, was Live and Kicking
