Except she didn't. In fact, she prefaces most of her points with what leads up to the most questionable moments in the game.
How about the argument that she uses the subject object dichotomy wrong?
Except she didn't.
How about the argument that she limits the characters roles to their misfortunes rather then their characterizations?
Except she didn't. For a lot of her examples, it is a cold hard fact that their misfortunes ARE their characterizations, which is the problem that is being addressed.
How about the argument that she is making it seem like the damsel in distress trope is being used more widely then it is?
Because it HAS been that widely used and is STILL widely used to this day?
How about the argument that she has a conclusion first and only find things that support it.
Or she came to that conclusion BECAUSE of the evidence she found to support. The point of an academic presentation like this is showing WHY that evidence lead to the conclusion you reached.
All she did was upscale the footage and blurred out things that would make it more obvious where she took the footage from.
That's... still a hell of a lot more work than just recording your own footage. Just sayin'.
She mostly points out that Anita shows a lot of games that were commercial failures
As well as MORE than plenty that are held up as the flagship games of their system/generation. And a lot of the ones that failed didn't fail because they made use of the Trope in question, so that doesn't give them a free pass in cataloging their addition to said Trope.
Inua also pointed out how Dinosaur Planet had TWO main characters, Saber and Krystal. However, when Anita brought the game up in one of her videos she neglects to mention Saber at all.
Because Saber is completely irrelevant to the problem and to bring him up would just be a pointless, time wasting aside. A character being created in an earlier version of the game and then left on the cutting room floor happens all the time.
The PROBLEM in this case is that you had a game that originally started with a female protagonist who had her own agency and character arc and then turned her into nothing more than a helpless kidnapping victim with no agency and no purpose other than to be something for Star Fox to rescue.
Not mentioning Saber does not change this, nor does it magically disqualify the point of how bad what happened to Krystal was.
I should also add that there would have been a princess to save as well, had the game come out on the N64 as originally intended.
A female character rescuing a captured female character carries a MUCH different sub-text than a male character doing so.
Honestly, no offense intended guys, but the way you talk makes it sound like you never actually watched the Tropes videos and only formed your opinions based on these response videos.
But... I guess you don't want to watch them and I can't force you and, honestly, this thread is starting to leave me feeling depressed that I have to keep making these arguments so I guess that's all I got to say.
