Anime: Persona 4 The Animation

I find it funny how the majority of Yuu's lines were options in the P4 game itself such as the part where Yosuke got wrecked by Chie, "I better leave him alone," sadly there's no "Critical hit to the 'nads" line

as for Yuu unbuttoning his shirt, I'm just going to say that its symbolic.... like when a girl cuts her hair

He unbuttoned his shirt because he was HOT :P

Ok, 2 episodes in and this anime already has more action than the entirety of Trinity Souls. Episode 2 was epic! :castlerock:

Differences Review 1 - Episodes 1 and 2

I'm gonna be bored and point out some differences from the anime, game, and every now and then the manga (there'll be a point where I'll stop on the manga because of its lack of scanlations). For spoilers sake, I'll put these in HIDE tags until probably the next episode. Kinda like my own personal review that I used to do with Digimon Xros Wars and Pokemon Best Wishes a while back.

Episode 1 - I'm Yourself, You're Myself
[hide]-One of the most notable differences from the anime, game, and manga is the name of the main character. While you can name your character in the game, which is one of the main points of many SMT games (usually named Protagonist and such), the manga, like P3, gave the character his first set name: Seta Souji, which settled to many of the Persona 4 fans since its release, much like P3's Minato Arisato and P3P's Minako/Hamuko Arisato (though the latter didn't require a medium but the existence of Minato). Like Tatsuya Suou and Maya Amano of the Persona 2 games, Yuu Narukami is one of the only Persona Protagonists to have an official name as he gets his name from the anime (especially since the upcoming P4 Fighting Game has him listed as Yuu Narukami).
-Lack of Rise footage, which I find okay. I mean, yeah, they probably showed her commercial as Dojima's car drove past the TV shops or something, or I think it was a poster, but it's not something really well missed.
-Yosuke's introduced later than how was inadvertently introduced way earlier in the game. In the anime, he's introduced as getting "a critical hit to the nads" (as KaitoTheRamen Bandit pointed out is not in the anime...or something like it at least, don't know how it's done in Japanese...), while in the game, he also got his first "critcial hit to the nads" when he rides his bike into a pole (you dumb ****. lol).
-Well, for the sake of the anime time length, I'd understand scenes like the kids being at the crime scene be cut out. It really isn't a major loss.
-The game never fully explored or directly explained Yosuke's feelings for Saki. It was more or less implied, but it took me a while to figure out that Yosuke liked Saki (more like his Social Link). So I was like, "Oh! Snap! Okay!" when I finally confirmed it in the anime. I just don't like Yosuke, shut it. lol
-Okay, for anyone who's picky about the little details of the game, everyone would all know about Souji'sYuu's transition from the buttoned-up high school jacket to the cool badass that he looked at the end of the episode. In the game, I believe Yuu had his jacket like that since he first wore his uniform, so the anime's take on unbuttoning his shirt after summoning his Persona for the first time was pretty badass. Oh wait, a bit ahead of myself...
-First battle a lot earlier than before. Instead of returning back to the real world, Kuma simply gives Yuu the glasses to help the kids escaped. He gets his glasses with Yosuke in their second visit, IIRC, but I guess you can't have a Persona anime first episode without a first battle. The place they went is somewhat unfamiliar, but it's probably that park by the Samegawa Riverbed or something. But yeah, badass. They don't need weapons or anything.

Great first episode, worth the rewatch. It's especially fun for Persona 4 fans and would probably want to make you replay the game for nostalgia sake (that's what I'm doing anyway). Feel free to input any more subtle or significant differences you can think of it.[/hide]

Episode 2 - The Contractor's Key
[hide]-So it looks like the Velvet Room will be visited at the beginning of every episode, but I guess it's too early to tell. I don't know why the title has nothing to do with the rest of the episode except the beginning, though...
-...Okay, someone explain to me. Is "Fish-Face" supposed to be in this part of the story or earlier? I couldn't remember very well. But I hated him...so much...and I still hate him now.
-So my favorite little tid-bit in this episode was when they went "The previous day..." instead of starting where they left off. But...yeah...Saki's dead face...better than that reporter's, but...still....creepy...
-Was Yosuke's obsession over Saki's text messages part of the game story too? Because I noticed that in the anime and it seemed more prominent to me than it would in the game...
-Yeah, lack of first battle. But there's still the first boss battle!!
-Okay, this is where I offer a difference explosion. The game is very...game-y. You encounter the Shadow, go through the fighting sequence, the resolution at the end, and done. In the anime and manga, it's given more dimensions than the game (because, well, it's an anime/manga). Yuu/Souji fights Yosuke's True Shadow, True Shadow continues to taunt and mess with Yosuke's head during the fight, and Yosuke continues to doubt himself. And unlike the game is Yuu's/Souji's signature bro moment: punching the guy in the face. In the manga, it was intentional, as Yosuke needed to shut up for a second and face reality. The anime's was more comical and accidental, with Yuu going, "Oh, wrong guy...". Bro moment doesn't happen in the game until late into Yosuke's Social Link.
-Also, a major difference between the anime and game in the manga is Yosuke's acquiring of his Persona. Unlike the first two mediums, the manga shows that Yosuke accepts his true self and gains his Persona....while FIGHTING his true self. Yeah, a bit of inconsistency there, but y'know...I liked that the anime's True Self had a content and pleased smile than a simple nod in the game.

Courage UP

It's the episode that made me like the anime more than the game. I hope to see how the future episodes play out the game mechanics.[/hide]

...I had a lot of fun writing these. =D

Edit:

Also, did anyone else who is a HUGE fan of Persona 4 scream "SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE JUST ORDERED A STUPID-LOOKING BOSS!!" when Shadow Yosuke transformed? (anyone who knows what I mean by "a HUGE fan of Persona 4", kudos to you. If not, video below...)

When I watch the anime, I always have the hiimdaisy comic dubs in mind as well, especially when Yosuke and crew hear that Saki died "THAT'S BECAUSE SHE'S DEAD" and then I laugh hard

I think my favorite character that transitioned (artwork wise) really well was Chie, she looked cute in the game (i'm a guy who likes short haired girls mind you) and looks even cuter in the anime :buttrock:

I'm glad that the fighting scenes actually have depth instead of having Izanagi spamming Zio on SY, I doubt they're going to bring up the Yosuke "Hey guys! I brought weapons" scene because the fights involve just the Personas and not the humans, although too early to say

Yeah, to me, it's like G Gundam. The GundamPersona is controlled by your mind and body movements; hence Izanagi and Yuu punching out Shadow/Yosuke at the same time.

I had their Anime Opening stuck in my head all day, I was humming it and moving my butt back and forth when I was working front counter at the cash register >>

I need to get my P4 OST into my iTunes when I get my laptop back. But I'm more super mondo excited for the NEVER MORE-Persona4:Reincarnation- album coming out next week. It'll make my midterms week more enjoyable.

Do they have a release date for the opening and ending singles of the anime?

I have a gut feeling that the OP and ED are going to be tracks for the Reincarnation album, can't be too sure though but since the OP and ED are done by the usual suspects, it's a possibility that they could be

edit: nvm, the OP and ED are not included in Reincarnation

edit: I just realized why they can't make a Persona 2 anime...
because they'd have to do a Persona 1 anime first because of CONTINUITY

editedit: About Episode 3
[hide] I was still laughing as I had the hiimdaisy comics running through my head, I also find it funny how Yosuke finally got a critical hit to the nads, as well as the people implementing Yosuke showing weapons in the open.
I also find it funny how Yosuke summoned his Persona, which was the same as the game except without his weapons to hit the card with.

So they also found a way to implement the Persona Change as well, which is just like Pokemon, CHANGE! Go! Pyro Jack, and then proceed to roflstomp Dominatrix Banana Head

I heard that in the manga, DBH actually kicked Jiraiya in the sack, i'm sad to not see that in the anime as well, aw well, I find it to be a good episode all and all[/hide]

Just got finished watching episode 3, and it was awesometastic! I'm glad they're going to be using the MC's ability to switch Persona =D

I lol'd when Banana Head came on, especially when I saw the red smiley face at the top XD

Man, this is definitely the most epic anime I've seen in a loooooooooooong time~

Differences Review 2 - Episode 3

Episode 3 - I thought we were friends
[hide]-A little tidbit, but back in the game, you chat with Yukiko a bit on the way home from school. The manga also stays true to that, but it seems that it's been omitted from the anime. I don't remember if what was talked about was given the visual form of how Yukiko and Chie met (I think that's what the conversation with Yukiko was about) shown in this episode, but that conversation takes place after Yosuke's dungeon. I don't remember very well what the game's content of the thing is, but this gives me enough incentive to replay my game. (I missed the Death Social Link, anyway.) How Chie and Yukiko met in the manga, however, was shown during Chie's Shadow battle at the beginning of Chapter 9 (I don't think this scene was shown in the game, so it's cute to have this in the anime).
-The anime stays true to the game's Junes being crowded, and you/Yuu have/has to beckon Kuma (wanted to call him Teddy, buuut...) to talk to him through the TV, getting bit in the process. In the manga, the same thing applies. However, they show what happens on the otherside, where Kuma sees the hand and is hypnotically entranced by it (his pupils gets swirly while he drools). I really find this funny...
-Seriously, Yuu's lines in this episode are funny. "It makes me wanna cry..." and "I wish I taped it..." I nearly shat myself watching this episode...
-THEY KEPT IT!! THEY KEPT THE WEAPON SCENE!! OMG, YOU FUCKING NOOB HANAMURA!! The weapon scene was omitted in the manga, but the police scene is still there, on that Sunday weekend. A big difference, however, is going to the TV world: the "gang" went in with their weekend clothes on, as opposed to their school uniforms as always.
-It looks like weapons are really omitted from the anime. I THINK the manga omitted the use of weapons too.
-Unlike the manga, though, the anime seems to utilize both the use of All-Out Attacks and Change Persona. All-Out Attack cut-in sequence is now altered to allow animation and weekend clothing. I will be adding a section after each episode review for each Personae Yuu Changes.
-The game and manga never touched this, but anime shows that the dog that Yukiko found became Chie's. IT'S A SAINT BERNARD! I LOVE THOSE FUCKING BEASTS!!

Like episodes 1 and 2, this anime doesn't disappoint. It distincts itself from both the game and the manga by taking stuff away or adding them into the series, such as little anime-exclusive tidbits (the dog and the weekend TV session) and removed mechanics (weapons). Fail-amura's little added expression with the weapon scene really got me though. Almost pissed myself when he tried to look like a killer. C'mon, Dumb-suke...c'mon...

Yuu Narukami's Change Persona(e) of the episode
Pyro Jack (Jack-o-Lantern in the Japanese)
Level 32 Magician Persona that specializes in Fire (Agi) spells. It is the brother demon of Jack Frost and has appeared in many SMT series titles as a mascot (though Jack Frost is more popular). Starts with Agilao (3rd Level, 2nd Tier Fire spell) and Tarunda (Enemy Attack-debuff Spell) and can be obtained by fusing Ares of the Chariot Arcana and Mithra of the Temperance Arcana. Information can be found here.[/hide]

Anything you guys wanna throw in, go ahead. I mighta missed something. But just to let you know, these difference reviews that I'm writing aren't made to glorify a certain medium, but to expand on some little trivia that's shown on one medium, but not on the others. If you've played the game and are watching the anime, read the manga, too (if you can stand reading manga, anyway).
