Can We Talk About the Evolution of Animation Styles in Anime?

Animation in anime is such an interesting topic, especially when you look at how styles have changed over the decades. From the classic hand-drawn aesthetics of the 80s and 90s to the hyper-polished CGI that we see in recent hits like "Demon Slayer" and "Attack on Titan," it really makes you appreciate the evolution of the medium.

I think a major turning point was when studios like MAPPA and Ufotable started blending traditional techniques with CGI. You can see this beautifully in "Fate: Stay Night - Unlimited Blade Works," where the fight scenes are on another level! But some fans still have a nostalgic soft spot for the older styles, like the unique character designs from shows like "Mobile Suit Gundam" or even "Cowboy Bebop."

What do you all think? Do you prefer the newer, slicker animation styles or do you lean towards the charm of the classic hand-drawn look? And are there any shows that you feel represent either end of this spectrum particularly well? Let’s get into this!

Totally agree that the evolution of animation in anime is fascinating! The blend of CGI and traditional techniques has opened up so many possibilities. Just look at the fight choreography in "Fate: Stay Night - Unlimited Blade Works", the sakuga in those scenes is breathtaking! I love how Ufotable captures not just fluidity but also the weight and impact of each strike.

That said, I still have a soft spot for the classic styles. Shows like "Cowboy Bebop" not only have that iconic aesthetic but also a certain warmth and character that can be so hard to replicate with CGI.

It’s hard to choose between the two, each has its strengths! Speaking of which, have you checked out "Mob Psycho 100"? The hand-drawn art style combined with amazing animation during the fight scenes is a perfect example of how traditional styles can still shine today. What newer shows do you think hold a candle to those classic vibes?
