Just Scratch Behind the Ears
Because I'm tired of arguing with 12 year olds on the HJU facebook page.

Kamen Rider and Super Sentai are and have always been children's shows and 30 minute toy commericals. Stop fooling yourself into thinking they are anything else.

What pisses me off the most is to use your argument that they are not to bash Power Rangers for "making sentai into a kids show".

They are all children's programming!

Just because the Japanese have a higher tolerance for what they will allow their children to watch does not change this fact.

I do not know who Pierre Daniels, Kisuke D. Nara or 'Chopper Gundam' are on the board but I invite you to explain (not in text or 1337 style typing) your argument against it being a kids show.

I will give you the always been children shows, but that bit about "always" having been 30 minute toy commercials is false. As far as them and that power rangers thing goes, just ignore people like that.

If these are all just children's shows, then how do you explain all the older people on this board and others who are fans? You can't say they're all sticking with them out of nostalgia or growing up with the shows, as a lot of people haven't and only got into the genre a few years ago.

Now it's true a significant amount of people in the fandom grew up with PR and transferred over to toku upon discovering Sentai and the like. You could argue "nostalgia/fan loyalty" that's a holdover from PR, but not everyone has stuck with PR. I myself gave up on it years ago. What's keeping me with Sentai, Rider, Ultraman, etc.? Obviously there must be something in the genre that can appeal to people besides just the little kids. Of course kids watch these shows, that's not in dispute. But calling them kids' shows simply has a bad connotation.

If these people are saying PR is "making sentai into a kids show" then..... they're not completely wrong in a sense. Comparing 80s-90s Sentais to PR, the latter is indeed watered down at times. But I think you might be interpreting "making sentai into a kids show" as implying that they think Sentai is adult drama. Which I don't think most people are really saying.

Because older people watch stuff made for kids? You really didn't just try and make the argument that only kids can watch kids shows or like them? And how did they get into the genre? Most of the people you talk about got into this genre by watching Power Rangers. Another kids show. That doesn't even matter though. These are kids shows. They are JAPANESE kids shows.

Of course there is stuff that appeals to older viewers. That doesn't change the fact these are Japanese KIDS Shows. They are marketed to kids for toys and such. The live stage shows, the toy commercials, the people in suits and spandex. Older fans watch them for many reasons. They just enjoy these shows, nostalgia, and many other reasons. They are still kids shows.

Sentai was always a kids show. It is a Japanese kids show. From GoRanger to Goseiger. Yeah the different shows and eras of shows have had different feels, but they have always been Japanese kids shows.

Actually, weren't the early Sentai considered family shows? I know it might not sound like much of a difference, but I seem to recall reading the Japanese wiki once about how family shows and kids shows are separated in what's allowed.

Why are there fans so adamant in calling these shows as "kids' stuff" and get into a fit whenever anyone tries to say otherwise? I don't understand the mentality.

Because, at least in modern form, the are kids shows. Why is that such a bad thing? There are plenty of good kids shows that can dive into deep themes and be very well respected.

You'd be denying it if it wasn't. I mean, yeah, it's lame when you use it as an excuse for a discussion. But it's true, these are kid shows.
