Noah Hawley To Produce Far Cry TV Series For FX

Until very recently it seemed prolific TV producer Noah Hawley could do no wrong, and then he delivered Alien Earth. We hope we’re not witnessing the beginning of his decline, but that will depend on if he can make a brilliant TV series out of….the Far Cry series of open world action games. That’s what he wants to do next, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob Mac (yes, he legally changed his last name to “Mac”) will be involved as producer and star of each season, playing a different character each time. It sounds like what Hawley has in mind is a wackier version of his own Fargo series. “What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology,” Hawley confesses. “Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme. To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.” It’s not that much of a stretch […]

Feels like Hawley is trying to recover from Alien Earth, and this project could help him if he handles it with honesty. Far Cry works best when the story focuses on strong villains and messy human decisions. If he keeps the tone grounded and avoids too much random humor, it can work. Rob Mac playing a new character each season could be interesting, but only if he avoids making every role feel the same. I also hope they do not turn the show into something that looks like Fargo with louder colors. Far Cry has its own identity, and the tone shifts from game to game. The series needs variety. FX usually allows creative freedom, so there is space for something bold. I am just hoping Hawley does not repeat the same mistakes he made with Alien Earth.

Somebody finally decided to adapt a game series that actually fits television. Far Cry stories are short, self-contained, and focused on character drama. This gives them flexibility. Rob Mac switching characters each season gives the show some energy. It might help avoid long-term fatigue. Ubisoft trusting them with the franchise sounds surprising, but maybe they want something more prestige-driven.

Not sure what to think yet. Hawley can be inconsistent. Rob Mac is funny, but Far Cry is not comedy. If they go too silly, it might lose the atmosphere.

Hoping they take inspiration from Far Cry 2 or Far Cry 3. Those games had strong moral tension. If the show keeps that tone, it may work. FX has done good action dramas before.

Thinking about this makes me cautious. Far Cry stories are often messy and loud, while Hawley usually aims for careful structure. Sometimes putting two opposite styles together creates something fresh, but it can also feel confused. Mac can be funny and emotional in the same scene, so maybe that will help keep the show grounded. I will watch the pilot before forming a final opinion. Many game adaptations fail because they try too hard to copy the game instead of finding the heart of the story.

Not going to lie, this sounds fun to me. Far Cry stories never pretend to be subtle, so letting Hawley explore something more chaotic might help him break away from the pattern his recent work fell into. Mac has good energy, and I like the idea of him switching roles every year. If FX gives them enough budget, they could build some exciting environments. I just hope they avoid turning everything into nonstop jokes, because Far Cry works best when the humor mixes with darker themes.

My first reaction is curiosity, not excitement. Far Cry stories change a lot in tone from game to game, so a writer needs flexibility. Hawley can be flexible, but sometimes he tries to be too clever. If he focuses on clear storytelling instead of layered metaphors, the show could attract both gamers and casual viewers. Mac helped make Mythic Quest lovable, so his presence could help lighten the mood when needed.

Seeing Noah Hawley take on a Far Cry show makes me feel unsure. His style can be thoughtful, but Far Cry usually leans on unstable characters, violence, and strange moral choices. Matching those two styles will require careful planning. The anthology idea fits the structure of the games, so that part makes sense to me. What concerns me is how much humor they plan to include. Far Cry can be funny but usually in a dark and uncomfortable way. If the tone becomes too playful, it may lose the emotional weight that made some game villains memorable. Rob Mac playing a new role every season could work if he avoids repeating the same performance. I want the show to highlight both the chaos and the personal struggles that each game hints at. Maybe it can surprise me, but Hawley needs to be more consistent than he was with Alien Earth.
