Crunchyroll announced today they have acquired the North American theatrical rights to the fantasy adventure anime film Whoever Steals This Book. This story is about Mifuyu Mikura, teenage citizen of Yomunaga, a town famous for books. Everyone comes there to get books, and Mikura is at the center of it: her great-grandfather founded the town’s biggest, grandest library, Mikura Hall. It’s been in her family for generations and they have always managed it. But Mikura is not Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Being overexposed to books her whole life has left her sour on the whole concept of collected text. Mikura HATES books. Turns out, however, there was one SPECIAL book in her library…a book that was just stolen, and had a magic trigger on it that would unleash a CURSE on the town if that theft occurred. Mifuyu hating books her whole life because she grew up surrounded by them is such a good twist. Most protagonists in these kinds of stories are obsessed with reading. This feels different and I respect it. Hope the curse and the family secrets actually go somewhere meaningful instead of just being excuses for cool fight scenes. Day one watch for me when it drops.

This looks exactly like my kind of thing. Magic books, curses, jumping into different worlds, plus a grumpy protagonist who has to deal with it all. Mashiro sounds like she'll be the fun one to balance things out. Daiki Fukuoka's first film too? New directors can surprise you. Counting the days until we get a trailer or some stills.

Crunchyroll acquiring theatrical rights? That means they're serious about pushing it in theaters here. Good for them. The premise is solid: mystery + adventure + magic words power. If the thief reveal and family drama hit hard it'll be worth it. Not getting my hopes too high though, a lot of these movies promise big and deliver okay.

Sounds cute. Teenage girl who hates books has to save her town by going inside them. Simple but charming. I like the "power of words" line in the description, hope they actually do something interesting with it instead of just pretty effects. Will probably check it out with my little sister when it streams.

This has potential to be really special if they lean into the emotional side. Mikura's sour attitude toward books could lead to some strong character growth by the end. The great-grandfather founding the library adds nice family weight too. First film from the director so fingers crossed he nails the pacing. I'm cautiously optimistic.
