Our First Look At Lobo In James Gunn’s Supergirl Movie

We got our first peek at Supergirl at the tail end of the Superman movie released last summer. As a contrast to Superman, a total Boy Scout, Supergirl was depicted as a blonde mess, an impression that was expanded with the first teaser for her own movie last December, where she was depicted as even more of a mess. The question is, who did she learn it from? Who’s the bad influence in her life? Aha — so it was him! Jason Momoa makes his first appearance as supporting character Lobo in the brief clips released by WB over the weekend. If you’re unfamiliar with Lobo, he’s what happened when Wolverine first became popular and the competition at DC decided to make fun of Marvel by introducing a character even more over the top than the wild-haired Canuck was. While Wolverine is a hero, Lobo has no redeeming qualities at all. He’s a selfish, sleazy, burping, cigar-chomping biker dude from space — and the sole survivor of his home planet, because HE’S the one who destroyed it. Lobo is a bounty hunter who rides around on a floating space Harley, says “frag” in every sentence and carries around a massive […]

Lobo has zero good qualities and that's what makes him work. No redemption arc, no sad backstory excuses. He just is what he is. Momoa stepping out of the trailer like that shows he's loving every second. This is the Lobo we deserve after all these years.

Momoa as Lobo is such a good pick. He already has the size, the energy, and the smirk. That quick clip of him on the bike with the chain looks brutal. Supergirl dealing with this guy is gonna be entertaining.

I like messy heroes, so this version of Supergirl already works for me. Adding Lobo explains why she is messy without excusing it. That is important. Trauma explains behavior, but it does not justify hurting others. Lobo represents the worst possible response to loss. Supergirl is somewhere in between him and Superman. That is a strong setup. Jason Momoa also brings physical danger. Lobo should feel like he could kill someone easily, even in a casual way. If that danger is present, Supergirl pushing back against him will feel meaningful. I do not need him to have a big arc. He is a tool to show who she is and who she does not want to become. That is enough for me.

I am honestly tired of seeing those Snyder bros everywhere saying Jason Momoa “demoted himself” by playing Lobo. That makes no sense. Acting is not a job ladder where you move up or down by costume color. Momoa clearly fits Lobo better than Aquaman. His energy, his body language, his sense of humor all match Lobo more naturally. You can even see he looks happier doing this role. That behind the scenes clip alone shows more joy than most of his Aquaman press tours. Some actors just enjoy certain characters more, and that is normal. The Snyder bros act like Momoa betrayed something sacred, but the truth is simple. The Snyderverse is over. It is not secretly coming back. No studio is waiting to surprise them. Clinging to that idea just makes them sound bitter. I liked parts of those movies too, but I moved on. They should do the same.

I like how they kept Lobo exactly like the comics. No softening him up, no making him a misunderstood anti-hero. He's just a gross, selfish bounty hunter who killed his own planet. Supergirl looking annoyed when she sees him is hilarious. This could be the most fun DC movie in years.

Lobo is one of those characters who can age badly if handled wrong. Jokes that worked in older comics do not always land now. Jason Momoa smoking and laughing feels on the edge for me. It could be fun, or it could feel forced. What saves it is Supergirl’s reaction. She looks annoyed, not impressed. That makes me think the movie understands the problem. I like that Supergirl is not shown as clean or polite. Heroes do not always start that way. They grow into it. If Lobo represents the path of never growing, then he has a purpose. I just hope the movie gives him limits. Thirty seconds is enough for a first look. I do not need him dominating the runtime. This could work if it stays focused.

Oh man, they actually did it. Lobo looks spot on. That hook chain, the floating Harley, the “frag” swearing replacement—everything’s there. Momoa’s got the size and the smirk to pull it off. Supergirl calling him something nasty before the cut is gold. This is the kind of weird team-up I didn’t know I needed. Gunn knows how to mix serious with stupid. Excited.

This feels like James Gunn doing what he always does, and that is not always a bad thing. He likes characters who are broken, annoying, and chaotic. Lobo fits that pattern perfectly. Jason Momoa looks very comfortable, maybe too comfortable. I worry that it will blur into his past roles and feel repetitive. Still, Lobo has always been exaggerated, so realism is not the goal. I am more curious about how Supergirl reacts long term. If she pushes back and sets boundaries, that tells me the movie has a spine. If she just follows his lead or copies his behavior, then it becomes shallow. The teaser alone does not answer that, so I am waiting before judging too hard.

Jason Momoa as Lobo is perfect casting. I always thought he has that crazy energy that fits the character. Seeing him with the cigar and that hook makes me smile because finally DC gives us the real Lobo, not some watered-down version. Supergirl looking annoyed at him already tells me their scenes will be funny. I like how they keep him dirty and loud like in the comics. This movie might actually be good if they let him stay wild. Can't wait to hear him say "frag" a hundred times. Momoa looks like he is having the time of his life. Good job James Gunn.
