The Little Mermaid: A Public Domain Tale Takes a Dark Turn Did you know The Little Mermaid is a public domain story? Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale is free for anyone to adapt, as long as their version doesn’t infringe on copyrighted elements, like Disney’s Ariel. That’s why we’ve seen other interpretations, such as the 1980s anime where the mermaid is named Marina. This December 17, Lionsgate will release their own adaptation of The Little Mermaid, and trust me, this one won’t leave you feeling kissed by the sea breeze. In this chilling reimagining, the titular mermaid, named Aurora, isn’t just a mermaid—she’s a siren. Sirens, often seen as the vampires of the sea, lure sailors with their beauty and angelic voices before devouring them. With a plot this dark, part of your world becomes part of her menu. For Those Seeking a “Classic” Look If you’re among those who got poor unfortunate souls over the race swap in Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid, here’s your chance to see a red-haired mermaid. Aurora is portrayed by Lydia Helen, who bears a striking resemblance to what some fans envision as the “classic Ariel.” That said, let’s not forget the hate Halle Bailey […]

Sounds like they're taking a dark turn for no reason. The ocean already faces enough threats with pollution and climate change. Do we really need a movie that portrays mermaids as scary monsters? It perpetuates negative stereotypes and could discourage people from protecting our oceans.

Looks like the folks who couldn't handle a Black Ariel got their wish. A white mermaid, but with a twist. Guess they forgot the original story wasn't exactly a feel-good tale.

It's ironic how the same people who complained about a diverse cast are now getting a version that's darker and more gruesome. Perhaps they should've considered the original story before making their racist remarks.

Karma's a b*tch, isn't it?

This reimagining could be visually striking! Imagine the underwater scenes with a dark and gothic vibe. The contrast between Aurora's innocent beauty and her monstrous side could be incredibly interesting to see. Definitely looking forward to seeing the costume design and special effects.

Seriously, another public domain horror reimagining? It's getting old, really old. Can't Hollywood come up with something original? This constant trend of twisting classic tales into cheap horror gimmicks is not only lazy but also disrespectful to the original authors and their work.

It's like they're taking something beloved and cherished and turning it into a grotesque caricature. It's a shame that such talented filmmakers and actors are wasting their time on these hollow projects.

Oh great, another movie that uses nostalgia to sell tickets. "Remember that story you loved as a kid? Well, get ready for it to be dark and depressing!" Hollywood has no shame. Maybe they should focus on creating stories that haven't been done a million times already.

A dark and creepy Little Mermaid?! Sign me up! I loved the Disney version when I was little, but it sounds like this one will be way more intense. A siren mermaid who eats sailors? That's so messed up, but in a totally awesome way. Plus, a red-haired mermaid like the original? Sold.

This is just sad. Why ruin something that brought so much joy to so many people? It's like they're trying to take away our happy memories. I'll stick to the original Disney version, thank you very much. They'll ruin anything for a quick buck. First Pooh Bear, now Ariel? What's next, a horror remake of Cinderella?

I am sorry to break it to you but 2 of them already exists.

This is an insult to the original story and to the fans. I'm so angry and disappointed. I hope this movie flops hard.
