Confidence Queen – Con Artists Who Catch Scammers and More!

“Confidence Queen” is a 2025 Korean drama, 12 episodes, categorized as Crime and Comedy, and streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Based on “The Confidence Man JP” (2018 Japanese drama by Ryôta Kosawa).

  • Memorable Quote: “The truth is just another story we sell better than anyone else.”

SUMMARY: I’m a genio-path, but I can’t think crime away. Fortunately, I have two reliable partners, and the three of us fight crime together.

I’m a Genio-path Con Artist with a Kind Heart

In “Confidence Queen”, Yoon Yi-rang has a young friend, Myung Gu-ho, and a mature friend named James. Yoon Yi-rang targets people who are corrupt and greedy and gives them a taste of their on medicine. It’s a dangerous and dirty job, but someone has to do it. So she created a team.

Three con artists:

  1. Yoon Yi-rang is the leader, and thinking up elaborate schemes to catch the real villains is her specialty.
  2. James is a veteran scammer, so experienced that he could probably write a book about all of his tricks. It could easily become a Number 1 Best Seller.
  3. Myung Gu-ho is a rookie whom Yoon Yi-rang took under her wings. He followed willingly. He couldn’t resist her allure.

After the last job, alluring or not, Myung Gu-ho told Yoon Yi-rang that he quit! He had had enough, and he just wanted to live a quiet and peaceful life. The team can carry on without him. He called her a sociopath. But she gently corrected him: “I’m not a sociopath. I’m a sociopath and a genius. That makes me a genio-path.”

Whatever! Genio-path is not even a word! You just made that up!

Our Friend Was Injured.  We Have to Team Up Again!

Myung Gu-ho did not make an idle threat. He really did quit, and since he was adamant about going his separate way, she said goodbye. For a short period of time, his life was quiet and peaceful. Then one day, Yoon Yi-rang reentered his life. She fell out of the sky. Of course, she used a parachute.

Myung Gu-ho was happy to see her again and wary at the same time. He knew she didn’t show up for a friendly visit. But no matter what, he was not going to rejoin the team. Yoon Yi-rang told him that James was lying in a hospital bed, bandaged from head to toe, and they needed to team up to go after the people who caused his injuries. James was hurt badly?! How could he refuse and not team up to help James? Just like that, he and Yoon Yi-rang were working together again. Hopefully, James will recover from his injuries and the trio will be back together again. After all … there are a lot of corrupt and greedy people out there!

Viewership and Rating:

  • My Drama List: 7.6 out of 10 stars
  • Common Sense Media: 2 out of 5 stars

My personal rating is the same as MDL.

Confidence Queen” is not to be taken seriously. It’s a silly light comedy with a predictable plot, and I think the three (3) lead actors had fun when they were working on this series.

Wait, so you’re telling me this is the new drama of the year? A genio-path and two partners fighting crime while being con artists? Sounds like a wild ride! But is it actually good or just another attempt to ride the coattails of “The Confidence Man JP”? Somebody convince me before I waste 16 hours of my life! 😂

Myung Gu-ho was the most relatable character. He just wanted a quiet life, but he kept being pulled back into trouble. I think that is realistic because sometimes we want to escape problems, but the world keeps pulling us in. His decision to return for James also showed loyalty, and that made him more human. The drama works best when it shows that emotional bond between the characters, not just the cons.

I think people judge the drama too harshly. It was never meant to be taken seriously. The genre is comedy crime, so of course the plots are exaggerated and sometimes unbelievable. Personally, I laughed a lot when Yi-rang corrected Gu-ho by saying she is a genio-path. It shows she does not take herself too seriously either. If you want something deep, this is not it. But if you want stylish comedy with a little crime flavor, it works well enough.

The show had a good idea but the execution was uneven. Sometimes the pacing was too fast, like they rushed through the scams without building suspense. Other times it was too slow, with long conversations that did not add much. I also felt James deserved more screen time. He was supposed to be the veteran, but we mostly saw him injured. Still, Park Hee-Soon is always impressive, and I hope he plays more central roles in future dramas.

I watched “The Confidence Man JP,” and to be honest, that was sharper. “Confidence Queen” feels like a lighter remake with Korean flavor. It is not bad, but it lacks the same punch. Still, I understand why Amazon picked it up. Park Min-Young has a global following, and the light tone makes it easier for international viewers. For fans of the original Japanese version, this one might feel like a softer copy.

I think the line “the truth is just another story we sell better than anyone else” is clever. It captures the theme of deception in society, not just in the show. Everyone tells stories to survive, and sometimes lies are packaged as truths. This show uses that idea but keeps it funny. I like when dramas mix social commentary with humor, even if it is simple. That quote stayed with me more than the actual plot.

What disappointed me is the rating. IMDb 5.8 feels low, but I understand. If someone expects strong writing, they will not find it here. The strength is only in the actors, not the story. Park Min-Young always gives her best, but even she cannot save weak writing. I gave it 6 out of 10 personally, just for her performance. Without her, I would not have finished it.

I was surprised at how much I liked Gu-ho. He is inexperienced, sometimes clumsy, but his honesty balances Yi-rang’s manipulative side. When he wanted to quit, I felt he was the voice of reason in the group. But when James got injured, his loyalty made him go back. That is why the trio dynamic works: genius, veteran, and rookie. Without one of them, the show loses balance.
