Blood Rain

Blood Rain ~ A Highly Acclaimed Historical Mystery Thriller

“Blood Rain” is a 2005 Korean film, categorized as Historical Period, Costume and Period Drama, Thriller, Political, Revenge, Crime and Mystery. This old but gold movie is inspired by real historical prejudice against Roman Catholicism in the Joseon era. It is streaming on Tubi TV.

  • Memorable Quote: “When my blood falls as rain, I’ll drench your blood and flesh down to the bone.”

SUMMARY: A 19th-century serial killer. Five (5) murders, one per day, five (5) different methods of execution. An inspector is dispatched to an isolated island for solve the murders.

♦ It’s Not a Ghost!

“Blood Rain” is set in 1808 during the Joseon dynasty, on Donghwa Island, a remote yet prosperous community whose wealth comes from its technologically advanced paper mill. Despite its isolation, the island thrives—until a series of gruesome murders shatters its tranquility. The killings are not only brutal but disturbingly methodical. The perpetrator must be someone who understands both the island’s inner workings and its darkest secrets.

The government dispatches Inspector Lee Won-Kyu, a sharp, disciplined investigator, to solve these heinous crimes. He has a reputation for his unwavering commitment to justice. Lee Won-Kyu arrives to find a community paralyzed by fear. The townspeople believe the murders are the work of a vengeful ghost—the spirit of the mill’s former owner who was executed for practicing Catholicism. This historical prejudice against Catholicism and wounds left by religious persecution form a crucial backdrop to the story.

“I’ll Reveal the Truth With My Own Hands.”

Lee Won-Kyu’s methodical approach to the investigation contrasts sharply with the villagers’ belief in supernatural vengeance. His pursuit of truth forces him to navigate not only the physical evidence but also the psychological landscape of a community. The villagers are haunted by guilt, trauma, and unresolved injustice. As he digs deeper, he uncovers layers of corruption, betrayal, and long-buried secrets. The murders, he realizes, may be tied to events far more complex than a simple haunting—and the truth may be more terrifying than any ghost story. Nevertheless, he states plainly: “I’ll reveal the truth with my own hands.”

Lee Won-Kyu is certain there are no ghosts involved and the killer is human and wants revenge. If Lee Won-Kyu can determine why that “human” wants revenge, he’ll know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. He’ll uncover the serial killer’s identity and the reason why the killings were so vicious and cruel.

The Mill Has a Dark, Troubled Past

As Lee Won-Kyu begins his investigation, he encounters four (4) key figures whose lives intertwine with the mill’s troubled past.

  • Kim In-Kwon, a respected figure within the community, harbors knowledge that may be vital to understanding the murders.
  • Du-Ho, another central character, offers insight into the mill’s operations and the relationships among its workers.
  • Kang So-Yeon, whose quiet strength and emotional depth add nuance to the narrative, becomes an important voice as Lee Won-Kyu pieces together the island’s hidden history.
  • Man-Shin, the island’s shaman, embodies the villagers’ spiritual fears and superstitions, further complicating the investigation as folklore and reality collide.

“Blood Rain” blends mystery, historical drama, and social commentary, creating a richly textured narrative that explores how fear, faith, and power shape human behavior.

My personal rating is the same as Letterboxd.

YesAsia supplied an excellent plot summary of “Blood Rain”: “Set on an isolated island in 1808 during the Joseon Dynasty, it follows an imperial investigator hunting for a serial killer. Combining traditional detective work, historical religious persecution, and graphic gore, it is widely praised for its suspenseful, puzzle-box storytelling.

Another good summary was supplied by Heroic-Cinema: “’Blood Rain’ sets itself up for a classic who-dunnit, but soon enough is adding themes of social inequality, corruption and the darker side of the mass mentality into the mix; things much more typical to a good period drama than either a murder mystery or a horror film.”

I give credit where credit is due. Some reviewers explain things better than me! LOL.

An old but gold pick!! I love that this one is from 2005 because the historical mysteries of that era felt so grounded and gritty. Inspired by real events too?? That always makes the paranoia hit harder. People still calling it highly acclaimed twenty years later says everything. Adding it to my classics list right now.
