Korean dramas continue to grow in popularity worldwide. In particular, many viewers are captivated by the theme of time travel. The storylines are very imaginative, weaving together the past, present, and sometimes, even the future.
Time travel has always been very alluring.
Even though, according to NASA, a respected scientific authority, the time travel scenarios we see in movies, books, and TV shows ARE NOT POSSIBLE … that doesn’t stop writers from imagining all kinds of impossible/possibilities.
Korean drama scriptwriters come up with a wide range of time travel storylines, such as:
- travelers solving murders or even preventing murders from happening;
- travelers from the future going to the past hoping to alter the course of history;
- travelers from the future with knowledge of modern medical science going to the past to treat illnesses that used to kill people;
- travelers who not only switch timelines but somehow swap genders and end up in a different body;
- travelers who meet with real-life historical or legendary figures and work side-by-side with them to achieve their noble goals that have already been recorded as history;
- sometimes there is time travel mixed with the theory of parallel universes or the multiverse theory. (Does a Parallel Universe Really Exist? | HowStuffWorks)
Time Travel Genres
These time travel K-dramas are often categorized as sci-fi (or science fiction), fantasy, or supernatural genres, and quite a few are based on webtoons. The time travel narratives often have elements of romance and intricacies in relationships caused by characters who are from different time periods. These Korean dramas go back and forth between historical and modern-day settings, tell love stories (e.g. romance of star-crossed lovers who were forbidden to be together), and weave (or unweave) complicated plots (e.g. unraveling mysteries and solving crimes that had been unsolved for decades). Time Travel K-dramas create profound and thought-provoking experiences that captivate viewers all around the world! After watching a Korean series or film, a viewer can’t help but start speculating even more “What if” scenarios.
