It’s always fun to see what could’ve been in regards to certain games. How they started out as one thing, then completely became another. For the popular Witcher series, it’s impossible to not think about it’s vast story, big world, and main character Geralt. But at one time…it honestly didn’t have any of that.
In a video, complete with original game demo, the former project lead for The Witcher series Ryszard Chonjonwski talks about how the game was originally a lot like Diablo, and not The Witcher we know now.
So…what changed? We did it become what it did? Easy, a desire to full the true potential the books gave them.
“There was no communication between the story writers and the team, and everyone had their own vision of the game,” Ryszard Chojnowski says in the video. “Even though the art team was extremely talented, we realized that the engine shortcomings and the lack of direction and supervision was really holding the project back. So in May 2003 the board of directors made the decision to abandon the project.”
“The programmer wanted it to be a short and simple action title, whereas me, and the art team, and the writers, yearned for a fully fledged RPG to give justice to the novels we all loved.”
Guess they won in the end huh?
